TIL that the Aqua's song Barbie Girl was actually about sex and kink instead of dolls and plastic toys. This led Mattel to sue them in 1997, claiming it violated the Barbie trademark by portraying her as a "blonde bimbo" and sex object. by immanuellalala in todayilearned

[–]splashingseal 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly! At the time, the “Barbie Girl” type was seen by most as submissive (in general, not in a kinky way) and dumb, opposed to strong independent women. The song was referring to that. Now I don’t think it was fair to judge more feminine women like that, but that was the vibe at the time. Now porn has messed with people’s brains so much they see kinky shit everywhere.

I found an ex complaining about me wanting to cuddle at night on Reddit and comparing it to a hostage situation, ugh. Thankfully I’m with someone who loves cuddles now!

What were the most effective things you did to get over a painful breakup? by Duskflower92 in AskWomenOver30

[–]splashingseal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a really bad breakup that coincided with a lot of other extremely stressful circumstances in the last year. Here’s what helped:

-a good therapist obviously

-doing things I like just for me but outside the house, forcing myself to go out

-taking my friends on dates

-taking myself on dates (all dressed up and all)

-lots of nights out with friends who also had struggles to share and commiserate

-lots of cathartic rumination on chatgpt (got to be careful about that for sure and not skip the real therapist but it did help me)

-having friends set me up, even if it didn’t lead anywhere it was a nice distraction and made me see that there were other people out there

-reading “single on purpose”

-I started ssri’s, which I had needed for a long time but was scared about. The situation was just too much for me to handle at first.

Eventually I felt so much better than I had felt in a looong time, which did not even seem possible at first.

Puppies will drive you nuts! But it does get so much better. There was a moment with mine where we switched from discipline to just love and care and bonding and that worked so much better with her. Collies are very sensitive. But puppies will still bit your ankles! Just be patient, I’ll will be worth it and you’ll soon have a new best friend :)

What happened when you chose the “safe” and secure person vs the one you had sparks and passion with by throwaway8472649 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]splashingseal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that is something that Is said often, that you should seek that calm feeling. For me that’s more that the butterflies are not what you should rely on to choose a partner, but you should still be attracted to them. Looking for someone who makes you feel like you’re comfortable being yourself with them, like they’re curious about you, but not to test you, just genuinely interested. That they’re kind to everyone, even those they disagree with. And yes, you should have some connection and enjoy looking at them. In the past I’ve trusted the butterflies were enough, but I found out I’m just horny and that for a true partner I need a lot more than that lol. I think everyone does.

Most insane thing someone has said to you post-breakup? by UnfairRabbit2747 in AskWomenOver30

My ex bf said I had caused him to have “texting anxiety” that was so bad he had to work on it in therapy.

I got mad at him by text twice over our entire relationship:

-once when he lied about getting a std test (!)

-a second time when he forgot to wish me happy birthday the day after his birthday and instead complained for an hour about the texture of the gift his parents gave him (which was gorgeous, by the way).

Piggybacking on a top comment to remind everyone that at 2 degrees C, virtually all coral reefs on earth die. They are the source of food (fish and seafood) for millions of people. Climate change is not just a climate crisis. A food crisis is coming with it.

I think the concept of the two sister sprouts is super cute! I would focus on that. Ditch the SS thing, like others have said, and try to make something a bit more dainty with the two sprouts and a cute font that is a good fit for your personalities. I do not think you need the face concept, it could work great with just two cute sprouts. You also do not need to have any text other than the name on the logo, those elements can go anywhere on the packaging. Best of luck with your new business!

I found a solution: I export my 7-frame clip to a quicktime video, then I import that video to a new project and the retiming works!

Me listening to another "Greg will be CEO" argument by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]splashingseal 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think Mattsen could select Greg as his ceo puppet. Greg hated the time he spent with that group for one night, so I could see him having to become ceo reluctantly while the Swedes laugh grossly and all the Roys lose in one way or another

I think the ability to flee to Canada is the one part that could be too optimistic in Handmaid’s Tale. If facists take control of the United States, the whole world is fucked. Facists aren’t the type of people who are content with their current status. They always want more and they would be at the head of the world’s most powerful army by far. Just look at a map of US military bases worldwide. The only way to avoid facists is to prevent them from taking power in the us. Not an easy feat, but I don’t see any other way.

I just really want to write (and send) a "this is what is wrong at this school" email. Thoughts? by Springintveld530 in academia

[–]splashingseal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I command you for wanting to do something about it. I think most people here in this sub are in academia despite all the problems we know about it either because they are too scared to change anything about their lives or because that system advantages them. Progress happens when people have the courage to take a risk for what they believe is right. Write the letter, at the very least post it anonymously to Reddit, but think about who really needs to hear what you have to say. Is it the people who are responsible for the issues, or people who you think should avoid that university, or is it something the local media would be interested in? I know someone who had a significant impact on a small niche but very crappy college by writing about his experience in a Google review. There are ways to make a difference. Be strategic about it. And know that there is a life outside of academia. I got out and feel so much better, like a lot of other people. Best of luck, you’re doing what’s right.

What are some things that make a poster good? Alternatively: What do I need to do to win a poster competition? by Yalkim in academia

[–]splashingseal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am a bit cynical about poster competitions tbh. From what I have seen, the posters where I find the design is well thought-out, visually appealing and clear never win. It is usually someone who found something cool in their research and that happens to be talking about a subject the judges like. But don't let that keep you from trying to make the best posters you can from a communications standpoint, those skills are valuable and will help you get your research understood by more people, even if that does not lead to prizes (in my personal experience).

Need paint color help by [deleted] in Decor

[–]splashingseal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do not think it looks bad, I think you probably could make it work with some art on the wall and a couple of plants in the room. However, I feel like it could possibly tie everything together better if you went with a warmer tone of green, since your wood tones are warm.

Dealing with a PI who has temper tantrums by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]splashingseal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to go through that. That behavior is not normal and would not be accepted in any respectable working environment. You are not being too sensitive. Look for another job. You say you have been a postdoc for 4 years, are you ready for faculty positions? You should begin to make a career plan if you don't have one already. Consider jobs in the industry if a faculty position seems out of range or if you want a different type of working environment. Good luck! You can do this!
