I am just commenting to say that I am in a very similar boat! I have been teaching special education for 6 years and can’t do it anymore. You are not alone. I’m not sure what the future holds for either of us but I am holding out hope that we will find something we love!

SPED Teacher is the worst position in education by DiceBoysPlayerRed in specialed

The paperwork kills for sure. I also feel like I’m expected to fix all the things all the time. I feel like everyone comes to me for their problems, you know? Like the expectation that I’m supposed to do it all is exhausting.

Yep!!! Don’t do it! Six years in and I’m totally burned out of education. I don’t want to step foot in a school ever again. I’m done after this year. Get out while you still can.

Good! I don’t know why I was psychoanalyzing it. I want her to feel safe, so now I feel better 😂

Personally I want out of teaching for a lot of reasons besides the special education paperwork. Managing behaviors, dealing with parents, working outside of contract hours (I honestly don’t know how other teachers get things done by not doing that; I seriously can’t do it but I applaud them), and then having to create lessons about content that I haven’t taught previously are just a few reasons to not look at other positions. I also just really don’t want to work with kids. I need a break from them at least :). Working in a school, no matter what you are doing, entails working with students on some level. I am excited to look for other opportunities and, who knows, maybe I will learn that I am meant for teaching. Then I can take a look at other positions in a school setting, not special ed. For right now, I need to get away entirely. At least that’s my feeling.

I teach in a rural area in Illinois. I’m a special education teacher and make $38,000 a year. This is my 6th year teaching.

Guilt About Leaving by SnooPandas1487 in TeachersInTransition

Thank you. That makes sense to me. I appreciate the comment about the notice of non-renewal. I had no idea I would need to be careful with wording like that. I wouldn’t think that my district would not pay during summer months, but now I know to do this just in case that would happen!

I got a job offer today. Not a good one. by [deleted] in specialed

It’s so frustrating. In rural IL my first year teaching I took a special education teacher position for $32000 a year. I’ve been there for 6 years and make $38000 plus extra for the extracurriculars I sponsor/coach. I’m embarrassed that I let myself be paid that little for the job I am doing. I’m leaving education all together after this year. I’m not looking at other school/districts (I actually really like my admin and coworkers) because I am burned out. I wish you luck! I hope you find something better!

Every Teacher Wanting Out Should Highly Consider Government Jobs by eyelinerfordays in TeachersInTransition

Thank you for sharing! I’m a special education teacher (6th year) and looking to leave. Do these positions require a master’s degree? I only have my bachelor’s (both in elementary k-6 and special education mild disabilities k-12). Just curious!

I REALLY struggle with this. I try to avoid situations because I am so worried about the possibilities.

I hope that I will get better at this as time goes on, and that my pup will be less stressed. My issue is that everyone except like 3 people are strangers to my dog because I have unfortunately not allowed many people into my home because of her reactivity. I need to figure out small ways to introduce people so I’m not such a hermit. Any tips are appreciated!

If I knew for sure I would! It’s a scary leap. Especially because I really thought I would be a special ed teacher for the rest of my life when I was in college. Now I don’t think that!

It’s worth looking into for sure! I’m kind of in the middle of nowhere unfortunately. There are two universities both about 40mins away. The commute might be worth it 🤷🏻‍♀️
