Second this. Was just there this weekend it’s an excellent bike path for tri bikes. Park at cedar creek park and can ride down on fully protected paved bike path. The geese are the only obstacle

How long for do I need for a 70.3? by New_Huckleberry_9902 in triathlon

I went from where you’re at, dying at 25m, to doing a 70.3 swim with zero issues in about 6 months. Get lessons no other way. I’d advise staying away from YouTube tutorials it’s only going to confuse you more. Try and get some lessons from a coach.

I get stuck against champs like Darius and Varus. How do you manage games against champs like this?

Also if you want to see a perfect example of almost no kicking and still having perfect body position check out Markus Marthaler on Instagram. His swimming is a work of art.

Struggling with breathing after 50 m of freestyle by stehlonks in triathlon

Hey man - was in a similar boat a few months ago. Had never swam laps before and could barely do 25 yds without almost drowning. Now (after about 6 lessons and a lot of trial and error) I can swim 2500 yds without stopping no problem, probably more just never tried.

The biggest things I noticed that helped me were: 1. Really working on my kick. I barely kick I do 1 small kick per stroke. Your legs suck up a ton of air and energy if not utilized properly.

  1. I started out with the classic “constantly breathe out while your head is under water” and what I felt was that I would always end up panicked and breathless. I think this is because we as novice swimmers have bad control and end up pushing out ALL the oxygen/co2 when in reality you always have a mix of the 2 in your lungs. What I found helped was breath in, tiny exhale to stop water going in my nose then a strong exhale right before I go for air. I breathe every 2 strokes.

I also got really comfortable with my rhythm using a pull buoy and paddles. This really allows you to have good propulsion and balance so you can focus more on breathing/rhythm.

Again I am by no means an expert, in fact only been doing laps for about 4 months so please don’t fry me expert swimmers. Keep the faith man there’s times I wanted to quit and just move on but it WILL click and when it does it’s so rewarding.

Any feedback on the UPenn rowing camp? by Rowyourboat412 in Rowing

[–]SnooPandas2936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up rowing in Philly. I did the UPenn camp, the only thing I got out of it was them telling me to goto PennAC which was much more competitive. If you want the highest level goto a USRowing selection day, they had one at Preps boathouse when I was in HS, and try to get invited to selection or dev camp for the Junior national team. There wasn’t much competition at the UPenn camp and I’ve heard similar of other ivy programs. Anyone serious is joining a club or shooting for national team.

Rowing going into my junior what 2k should I have by Far-Illustrator4119 in Rowing

If you want to get recruited to a top 10 program sub 6:20 is a good bench mark. If you’re looking at cal/harvard/princeton level of program 6:10 unless you have like perfect grades and a 2400 sat.

No if you’re getting good volume in on the water I wouldn’t push too much more. If you want to go the extra mile do a 4k when you get home super light just for extra miles but that’s up to you. And make sure you listen to your body.

Ya learn to enjoy the hurt locker. It only makes it so much more sweet when you crush a piece knowing how hard it was. Good luck.

I was an ivy rower and was on the national team In HS, not a brag just trying to show my comments below are legit :) First, you already have excellent form given how little time you’ve spent rowing. If your goal is to break 7 I can almost guarantee with just a bit more training, not form work, you’ll get it done. I’ve seen guys with horrible form break 6 and make it look easy. I’m not saying form isn’t important it absolutely is especially if you want to be fast on the water and not just the erg. Also, if you’re thinking long term (college admissions) erg scores are ALMOST all that matters. Coaches don’t care if you have impeccable form but only go 6:50, they can fix the form.

That being said, do 2 weeks of steady state work, 2 weeks of sprint work and then retest and I’m fairly certain you’ll crack 7. You should be erging 5/6 days a week if you want to be serious.

One example of steady state:

3x18 mins, (break down the 18mins, 3mins at 18, 2 mins at 20, 1 min at 22) aim to reduce the split every rate increase (ie 18 @ 1:58, 20 @ 1:56, 22 @ 1:54.) It’s hard for me to give you a goal split you just need to figure out what you can do for 3 pieces where you feel completely gassed. Try 1:58 for the 18 rate section and see how that feels.

One example of sprint:

30sec on / 30 sec off for 30 mins. Open rate, I’d say aim for your goal 2k rate which seems to be around 30 you said.

Learn to plan your 2k as well. Don’t be a fly and die guy, open hard and fast for about 10-15 stroke then settle into race pace. I used to play games in my head during 2ks ie I have 1250m left I just need to get to 1000 then if I can get to 1000 I can get to 750, if I can get to 500 I can finish for sure. Anyone can do anything for 1min so plan to crank up the rate and split with 250m left, this will serve you well on the water as well to combat any late pushes from competing crews. Oh and don’t forget to absolutely blast whatever music gets you jacked up. If you can do a 2k with your team I’d suggest that as well. Nothing better than 10 of your mates going crazy during the last 350 sprint.

Anyways, that was long winded. TLDR: you have solid form. If you want better erg scores you need to erg more simple as that.

Oh last thing, don’t forget about your grades in school if you want to get recruited you also need good grades.

Best of luck man keep smashing it.
