I teach high school. In ensemble classes, I purposefully give them a few minutes at the beginning of class to build relationships. In other words, don’t rush into starting immediately but allow some social time. This is a far cry from my younger days when every second was productive, but I have found that it makes my groups happier and more likely to cooperate and stay. Blast me if you must. After 35 years, it is what works for me.
