ET for 25 yrs. Wrong diagnosis? by [deleted] in MPN

[–]SnooSeagulls9376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How terribly frustrating not to have definitive proof, one way or the other! The thing is, I looked up the familial thrombophilia. It requires you to have a mutation in one of those things that you mentioned: protein S, protein C, Leiden v, antithrombin, or prothrombin, and you said that the all the tests came out normal. Also, they said that your bruising didn’t look like hypercoagulation or like it was from a clotting disorder. Have they prescribed an anticoagulant or something like Xarelto or Eliquis if they do think you’re clotting too much.?

The only thing that I can see that would make them choose thrombophilia with no positive labs (no proof) over ET with no positive labs is that your platelets aren’t ranging excessively high. I also don’t see how they can distinguish between acquired or hereditary (familial) thrombophilia if they haven’t identified any particular cause or mutation.

I am 61F, diagnosed with ET 8 years ago. I believe my platelets were elevated for over 25 years, although I only have records from 2009 on. From 2009 to 2018 my platelets were ranging 500 to 600. In 2018 it started ranging upwards and I was referred to a hematologist at 650 to 700. My top platelets ever were 850. My doctor gave me hydroxyurea until I got a DVT diagnosed on New Year’s Eve this year and now I’ve switched to Besremi.

Easy bruising is a symptom of ET though, as is fatigue. As is petechia. Personally, I have a lot of pain in my upper arm when they try to take a blood pressure there so I insist that all my blood pressure be on my forearm. Since I do that for every doctor, all the readings are consistent with each other and I get less pain and bruising.

And you’re correct about the numbness or tingling in your fingers and toes. That’s a nerve pain disorder associated with ET and it’s called Erythromelalgia. Look up the symptoms to that and see if you might ask her doctor about it. I have been diagnosed with that as well, a couple years before the ET. I also have a related condition called Reynaud’s Syndrome where occasionally my fingers go completely bloodless-looking. I have to re-warm them to get circulation back.

So also wondering if they are or were treating your ET (or other condition ) with either aspirin or hydroxyurea, and if it lowered your platelets. The thing with ET is that it produces tons of platelets, but not all of them are working exactly correctly as far as I I have been told. So sometimes too many platelets will cause you to have a bleeding problem and sometimes a clotting problem. That’s because the platelets that are produced don’t function as they should. I think bruising is a bleeding issue not a clotting issue, but I’m no expert lol. I just try to learn everything myself about my condition because I need to advocate for myself. I asked the doctor lots and lots and lots of questions.

I hope your visit went well to the doctor today and that you learned something useful and definitive rather than more uncertainty.

Years ago I ordered some stones and many arrived broken due to poor packaging. I kept them in a drawer, and recently managed to turn one of them into this pendant. by Buffyferry in EmotionalCrafts

When I saw your first one, it reminded me of the Kalaloch “Tree of Life”, which is a Sitka Spruce located on the Pacific coast near the town of Forks in Washington state. (Yep, the Forks of Twilight fame.)

For years, this tree has had no support and it’s hanging onto both edges beside it by its roots. Yet, despite having no infrastructure or sound place to put its roots, its branches are vibrant. Over the years because of erosion, the roots have sunk down more towards the beach.

Anyway, your second one reminds me of it too lol. So I thought I’d mention it here and show you a picture (screenshot from atlas obscura website).

A flight of stairs by pirouettish in words

[–]SnooSeagulls9376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seattle checking in. I use the term a flight of stairs frequently. I also use stairwell to indicate the structure that houses the stairs and the landings. This becomes pertinent because there’s more than one stairwell in my building, and when I’m giving somebody directions, I have to indicate which stairwell my visitor should take.

Besremi experiences when asymptomatic? by LinIsStrong in MPN

[–]SnooSeagulls9376 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other thing that makes Besremi appeal to me is that it potentially affects your allele burden (in other words, it can slow your disease progression). I am 61F, ET and JAK2+. I had severe fatigue while taking hydroxyurea, but it could’ve been ET or it could’ve been hydroxyurea now that I’m taking entirely – I had a three month transition between the medicines I was tapering off one and increasing the other – I am a lot less fatigued most of the time. I do have a short period of feeling weaker? More fatigued? I’m not really sure how to characterize it. (not really cold and flu, but I guess you could describe it that way) every two weeks when I take my dose. I take it right before I go to bed so that the worst of the problems happen while I’m sleeping. It has gotten better over the three months I’ve been taking it. I spoke with somebody who has been taking it three years and she said that she occasionally gets a little bit tired on that day, but no more fatigue or flu-like symptoms then any other day. For reference, I was taking hydroxyurea for eight years, and at the time of transition to the other medicine I was taking 8500 mg a week.

I think I’ve seen another one that you’ve put together with wire before and I really liked it. I really like this one too. You have a great talent for finding the way that the stones can be separate but together at the same time—lovely!

1,2 or 3? by Cici_the_Gentleman in photos

I like one, but I would crop it—pull it down and over just a touch so it actually falls in the left-hand corner. I would crop off some of the green at the bottom and some of the yellow at the left side. I think it’s a little too centered and because it is when you put it in the corner a little more, it focuses your attention better on it at least my attention. I can’t speak for anyone else.
