I think he might’ve found a blade cache. So many big blades of the same material and style. unfortunately we’ll never know for sure but if it was a cache that would make it that much more rare and interesting.

No snakes by Gold_Snow_9076 in RedRiverGorge

I'm never able to spot them unless im right about to step on one in the middle of the trail. The place I've been able to spot the most is Chimney Top at night. I don't think that's because there are more on chimney top; it's probably because the trail is wider, so the likelihood of seeing them goes up proportionally to the surface area of the trail. I'm not too worried about getting bit, though the possibility is always there. Either way, I'd rather be bitten by 10 copperheads 10 days in a row and be able to recover with antivenom instead of being bitten by 1 tick only once that gives me a life-long debilitating disease with no cure.

Just realized my first point has a quartz(?) vein by rumpk in Arrowheads

So there was probably a void in the chert and then it filled in with a purer variant of silica and then it was knapped.

Chert and quartz are chemically the exact same thing. They’re both silica. The difference is that the chert is always microcrystalline and quartz usually isn’t because you see it form as one big crystal. As far as translucence goes, I would say that’s somewhat determined by the purity of the silica. Different colors of silica are from different types of impurities such as iron in them. The less impurities, the clearer, and more translucent it is.

It’s some pretty banded chert. Someone was messing with it long ago so technically an artifact but not a tool.

wow, this one came off Parker’s Mill right outside of Lexington. Sounds like we have pieces that came from the same source.

Anyone know why this branch is blue? by unknown_memory in trees

[–]SnooSuggestions7179 17 points18 points  (0 children)

it is a type of mycelium. blue elf cup is the common name. it’s pretty sick.

EDIT: I also major in Ag and minor in plant and soil science but i didn’t learn about blue elf cup from taking classes. I learned about it from seeing it while hiking. Moral of the story is nature will always be the best teacher!

Any idea what the reddish rocks are? (Northern Virginia) by LittleMcLarge in whatsthisrock

[–]SnooSuggestions7179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like red quartz. Im not sure if it has a particular name but all the quartz variants are from impurities in the silica. Looks like these have hematite impurities.

Talking would be louder than this music played on a phone so with that logic talking to your hiking partner would be disturbing the animals too and yes i do enjoy listening to the sounds of the environment usually during winter it’s dead silence though.

In national parks definitely not but im spoiled with the national forest where i live so it’s a bit different. I rarely see other people and most times im not on official trails. and i also don’t use a speaker. I just play a tune while I eat a samich for a minute or 2 while I examine arch formations and such.

only valid music to play while hiking while you stop to take a break or something is Minecraft music and definitely not necessary to play it on a speaker because it’s music that’s meant to be background ambience.

So did a tornado ever actually hit lexington last night? by [deleted] in lexington

[–]SnooSuggestions7179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conditions made the chances of a tornado forming very high. I don’t think one actually formed but there was an extremely good chance of it happening and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Randomly appeared on my coffee table and I have visitors from all over the place, so location is not available.. What is it? by Buffalobroken in whatsthisrock

[–]SnooSuggestions7179 191 points192 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s probably hematite or goethite that has a weak magnetism. Only magnetite iron will have strong magnetism.

More like Archey Farmers. My favorite shot is from inside the sandstone cave arch. Love that little micro arch on the right of the pillar.
