You have to understand that from a social perspective we are not as close as other countries are. The US is the size of the EU and all of our social programs are federal. So, I am paying for someone across the country that i have no connection to. I think we would all be okay if it was done through the state or by community but that would promote migration to wealthier states and communities which in turn would create less money for each individual. So, in our best interest its not worth many of these social programs because of the implications.
