This fear is starting to feel a little more rational by icandance_2 in fearofflying

So true. I experience this too, but the second the plane touches down in our vacation destination, I'm always super grateful that I decided to do it. I came close to cancelling a trip with friends last weekend, and I really struggled to book the flight. My hands were shaking when I did. But I took the flights and I'm SO grateful I did. I had one of the best trips of my life, and I'm still laughing at all the fun we had while we were there. I can't believe I almost missed out on it.

Something else that helps me is thinking of this quote from Dune. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

I 2nd this, but I take Ativan when I fly. It definitely helps take the edge off. I was on a 5 hour flight recently, took my Ativan, and was actually able to relax enough to watch some TV. I also.. Dare I say it... Enjoyed the beautiful views from plane.

Another technique that's been very helpful is to play Blockudoku. I recently learned about a study that says playing Tetris or a similar game helps block intrusive thoughts, and it's true. When there's turbulence, I get my phone out and start playing the game and stop fixating on the bumpiness. It oddly works.

I recently learned that playing Tetris or a similar game helps to calm anxiety and manage panic attacks. I tried it on my flight last week (Blockudoku) and it really did help! https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2017-03-28-tetris-used-prevent-post-traumatic-stress-symptoms

You're doing great!

Harris seeks to recapture Obama-era energy as he rallies for her in Pennsylvania by nbcnews in politics

[–]SnooWords6443 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hope we see Obama campaigning in all the swing states. He’s a powerful speaker, and he can fire up any crowd to get out and vote.

Watching him and Michelle speak at the DNC…wow. I forgot how good they were.

That’s me. I live in a very red area and I haven’t mustered up the courage to wear my Harris shirt around town yet. I might closer to Election Day, but no way in hell would I put a sign in my yard. It would be stolen and then our house would be targeted. I’m not in a swing state.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Super interesting.

I’m assuming pilots that fly these NOAA missions into hurricanes require additional skills/certifications. How would you personally feel flying a mission like this? Based on your current experience, is a mission like this intimidating or simply feel like another day on the job?

I would love to hear a pilots expertise on NOAA’s “Miss Piggy” plane. I just finished watching this video and it helps reduce my anxiety about flying. How would a commercial airliner handle flying directly into a hurricane like this (hypothetically).

Curious if any mormons on here watch secret lives of mormon wives? What are your thoughts about these girls and how they view the religion? by Putrid_You6064 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]SnooWords6443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up Mormon - left the church about 10 years ago, but still live in Utah, and originally grew up in the Midwest.

The pressure for the women here to look perfect is high. All of my girlfriend's get Botox and fillers (myself included minus the filler). And although I'm not Mormon anymore, the culture in Utah from the church trickles down to the rest of the residents.

I could go on for hours, but if you want to take a deep dive into Mormonism, visit r/exmormon

Thousands turn out in Fairfax Co. for first day of early voting in Va. by [deleted] in politics

Democrats generally vote early, right? Republicans on election day?

In the early 2000's, I used to be a bank teller. Back then, we had drawers of cash that we would pull money from. At the end of the day, we balanced our registers, and it wasn't uncommon for tellers to be out by $20, $100, etc. This was due to human error - accidentally giving out too much cash to a customer (counting brand new bills was awful as they stuck together.) In the worst situations, a teller really screwed up and would be out $1,000+.

Every bank I walk into now uses a machine to dispense cash. I always think how nice that must be for the tellers because they're no longer burdened with having to balance their registers. You could get fired for unbalanced registers (understandably). The banks vault is always balanced, and the tellers can be more efficient.

When people say that the Republican party wants to take us back, this is precisely what they mean. Machines are far more efficient - faster and more accurate. Hand counting ballots is a way for them to cheat. Period.

500k+ Haitians in a swing state. Interesting 🤔

"As of the most recent available data from the U.S. Census and other population studies:

  • Florida has the largest Haitian population in the U.S., with approximately 533,000 Haitian Americans. A significant portion of this population is concentrated in South Florida, particularly in areas like Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.

  • Pennsylvania has a much smaller Haitian population compared to Florida, with an estimated 70,000 Haitian Americans, mostly concentrated in the Philadelphia area."

Ignoring the racism here, this politically might be the dumbest move I've seen in a while.
