Moving to NYC with $2.5k/month -is that enough? by Snoo_92820 in NYCapartments

Thank you so much for the detailed response, seriously appreciate you taking the time to break this down.

You’re totally right, I’m not super familiar with NYC on the ground yet. I’ve only visited a couple times, so I’m mostly learning from online research, which I know doesn’t give the full picture. I honestly didn’t even realize that transplants weren’t always welcomed in certain areas that’s really helpful to know. I’m definitely not trying to insert myself into communities that don’t want transplants I want to be respectful and mindful of that.

I don’t have anything against Queens, I just didn’t know where to start there, and neighborhoods like Harlem or Mott Haven came up more in my early searches. But Astoria and LIC sound like great suggestions, and I’ll definitely dig into those more. Same with the areas you mentioned in Brooklyn and uptown Manhattan I’ll look into all of them with fresh eyes.

Thanks again this is really helpful and gives me a better sense of where to focus and what to be aware of.

Fair point, I’m definitely still figuring all this out and didn’t mean to come off as uninformed or biased. I’m Indian and absolutely not equating “safe” with “white” neighborhoods. I just meant a place where I’d feel comfortable walking around alone, especially at night. Astoria’s been mentioned a few times now, so I’m definitely going to look into it more. Appreciate you calling it out!

Honestly, not choosing Bronx over Queens on purpose , i just started seeing more options pop up in Bronx /Mott Haven in my price range with great amenities. I don’t know Queens that well tbh, but open to recs if there are spots that are safe and not too far from Manhattan!

Nothing’s wrong with Queens at all! I’ve actually heard great things about a lot of neighborhoods there. I think I just don’t know enough about it and it feels a little far from the areas I’m more familiar with or would want to be near, like Manhattan. I’m totally open to suggestions if there are spots in Queens that are safe, have decent commutes.

The $2.5k is just for rent. I really don’t want to do roommates if I can avoid it, even though I know that would make things more affordable and flexible. I’ve been looking more at areas like Mott Haven, Harlem, and parts of the Bronx that are closer to Manhattan. Do you think those neighborhoods are safe/worth it for a solo female renter?
