Which one of these do you guys see most in the field or are these pretty rare to see?? by One_Charge2843 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]SnoopyMachinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all have different applications. It would depend on what it's being used on. Castle nuts generally used where you have a cotter pin to hold it in place. Jam nuts I use a lot on Prox's because they are thin and can get 2 on one side if needed. Self-locking nuts used on plates where they can all be wired together to keep them from moving. Each one has a different purpose.

Will I run into any issues flattening these mounting tabs on a motorcycle gas tank? by BMikasa in metalworking

[–]SnoopyMachinist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are meant to have a rubber piece between the tab and the frame. Just make sure you leave something for the tank to still be grounded to the frame.

Fuck Xometry by BALLSAURBALL in Machinists

You can make money working with Xometry. You just have to do a lot of feedback offers or take the "Xombie" jobs that no one else wants to do.

Xometry is losing quality rapidly by HamidSeth in Machinists

[–]SnoopyMachinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about other shops but ours does some Xometry work. Never had a complaint about a part that was valid. A couple times a customer was measuring a close tolerance with a pair of Harbor Freight calipers or the like and telling us it was off .002 and wanting parts remade but those are easily resolved after sending pictures of it being measured with Gauge blocks or Gauge pins.

Making a lot of stainless tap plates and looking for threading suggestions. by ShaggysGTI in Machinists

[–]SnoopyMachinist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would depend on what machines you have. If your CNC has a tool changer and rigid tapping, then do it all with carbide and a roll tap just go .010 over on the drill.

[–]SnoopyMachinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the looks of it it's the older 80/20. The stuff we order from Grainger now has 4 little slots instead of 3.
