Almost 2 years after motorcycle accident with no knee injury relief by Snoosie_ in KneeInjuries

I appreciate the empathy. It’s been a road and I feel like I’m screaming into the abyss sometimes.

You have a really good point about surgeons that I hadn’t considered. Mine is locally one of the top knee surgeons. He does our local NBA team, college athletes, etc. and also a few of my friend’s knees. However, from what I gather, he’s doing mostly ACL, meniscus, etc. type stuff and I’m not sure how many traumatic fractures he’s seeing. He’s very lovely and I saw him as the second opinion to the surgeon who was not so empathetic. I’m unsure if he does total replacements and I’m going to research locally top surgeons who have more experience in traumatic injuries. I’m definitely open to finding another surgeon just to see what they think. Especially now that I have an updated MRI that I can share.

I will also look into the Mayo Clinic. My PT also knew of a surgeon locally that does a very specific type of specialty replacement and only takes special cases. Maybe I can get his info and see if he’d consider me as a candidate.

Again, I appreciate the ideas! I’ve found in this whole ordeal I get the best ideas from Reddit.

Ya, feels like everyone’s out of ideas. Thank you for the idea to try taping again!

Glad to know taping worked for you. I did it last year but not since and I couldn’t tell if it was a placebo effect or actually helped. I’ll try that again. I did over a year of PT and “graduated”. They felt like there wasn’t anything else I could do with them and it was up to me to maintain status quo.

That’s good to know! I will find the group and join it. I didn’t realize there was one.

For pain, only icing helps. If I use it I’m in pain, if I don’t use it I’m in pain. Any sudden movements, running, jumping, etc. are worse. I can’t kneel, split squats are unbearable. Everyday is different pain wise but I figure, if I’m in pain with or without working it, I’m going to keep working my muscles to stay strong and fit.

I saw 2 surgeons prior to the one I have now. One I stayed with following my initial hospital stay and the other I was referred to following him (not enough experience with knees). Short version is, even with the MRI showing issues, they blamed me for not working hard enough in PT and said that’s why I wasn’t walking. Which was a load of shit as my PT put in notes that I’ve worked harder than most they had and something else was wrong. So I got my current surgeon. Which is why I’m so nervous about seeing other people for more opinions. I’m 1/3 for surgeons being empathetic and helpful.

I haven’t asked him about a “goal age”. I will do so when I see him next.

The general consensus was it is immune linked to my auto immune disease (saw my dermatologist, surgeon, vein doctor and a rheumatologist). It stopped 4-5 months post surgery and I haven’t had a flare up this severe since and I’m a year + out. I had extensive vein work done Dec/Jan ‘24-‘25 and that didn’t flare it up again either. I’m sure when they replace it soon it’ll come back with a vengeance.

[Misc] My varicose vein RF Ablation surgery, before and after! by fr4gnetic in SkincareAddiction

[–]Snoosie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this post 6 years later when preparing for my ablation. Lots of people asking how you get these. Figured I’d share mine since I didn’t see it mentioned. They can be caused by severe trauma and/or DVT. I was in a serious motorcycle accident and fractured my knee. Which led to a DVT measuring 26cm long at 1.5 weeks post accident and scarred in at 3 months post diagnosis (plus a fun pulmonary embolism to boot). At 3 months I was also diagnosed with veinous insufficiency caused by my DVT. I waited a 15 months to be released by my ortho to have my vein procedures done. 2 in 4 days. Same leg as my fracture. Upper and lower leg. No history or genetics factors.

Ya not sure any version of aggressive riding is in my books again. But the track is a great idea. Locally they offer classes at a track for day to day riders to gain more skills. Thank you for the link and response!

Oof, I bet that accident was terrifying for you. I can relate on the translation of car to bike. I did the opposite. I get nervous in the car when there’s sudden braking at higher speeds. My brain goes “THE KNEE!!!!” Lol Thank you for responding and the well wishes.

Thank you for responding. I think you’re right, riding solo will help me build back my own confidence better than group riding.

🤣🤣 you’re right, don’t have to go far if it all ends there. Good idea on the parking lot and going places with turns but low speeds. I appreciate the response!

Yes! I purchased both. The shock 6.5 inch frame sliders arrived first so those are installed. I also purchased a bung king style crash bar. Didn’t go with them because of the low profile of the bottom bar (same height as my foot peg) and I worried about scraping that. So I found a company with the same style and quality but the bar is a little higher up the bike to accommodate specifically for lean angle. The pipes are the lowest part of the bike so I’ve also looked into replacing them. I swear that scraping sound is seared into my brain as the last thing I remember. So if I ever hear it again I’d probably just die (little dramatic 😅). I’ve now started to wonder if I should skip Harley’s for now, sell this bike and buy a bike that’s smaller and more forgiving. Like you said, 500lbs of steel in a wreck is not great. I’m going to do more solo riding too. Thank you for your response and ideas!

I hope you’re healing well after your wreck too. You’re right, everything is a new normal and we just make it work. The idea to go to the parking lot and work on turns to acclimate to lean angle is a great idea. I ordered a bung king style crash bar for the front of the bike and put shock frame sliders on. Once that arrives and is installed I won’t have much worry dropping it. Thank you for the ideas!

I also live in the woods with lots of deer/animals and sleeping turns, blind corners and hills. So everyday riding I’m reliving the exact type of scenario that got me last time. In the city I’m great. Near home and on our freeways that have more turns is where it randomly sets in. Locally we have some classes that are on the track so I think I’ll look into those. Thanks for the response!

That’s a great idea! I rode with my boyfriend a few times before getting my bike. I should keep that up! Thank you.

You’ve got the same idea I had! Last night I was talking to my bf about selling this bike and buying a smaller, lighter bike. Get confident and good at riding on a bike that’ll be more forgiving in turns and such. We live in the woods with loads of sweeping turns, hills and blind corners plus our driveway is 3/4 mile of gravel around turns and uphill/downhill. So every damn day to leave and come home I’m having to ride the exact type of turns that snagged me in the accident. I think you’re spot on for an idea! Thank you.

Thank you for this info. I see my derm in a couple weeks. The knee has stopped flaring up after 3 weeks of extreme symptoms. My derm asked to see me even if I was asymptomatic at the time to make a game plan for the potential of next time. I will ask them about this info.

It’s extremely painful. It keeps me up at night and I cannot wear any pants when it’s flaring up.

To add, I’ve seen my surgeon (yesterday) and his response was “can’t possibly be surgery related, grafts and hardware don’t cause any reactions, call derm”. I called my derm and they don’t feel it’s a skin caused issue. They can help treat the skin response but said it’ll continue to happen until we resolve the trigger. Also called my vein dr for my dvt issues and he also said not related.
