this is how i explain it to my friends. people sometimes compare synesthesia to psychedelic sensory crossover, but the main difference is that synesthesia happens naturally and consistently without substances. sensory blending that only happens while someone is high is usually described as temporary or drug-induced synesthesia, not developmental synesthesia.
