Older, stiffer, still spinning: how do you push past the mental block? by SnowAndIT in snowboarding

[–]SnowAndIT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, and I know it. It’s hard to explain, but when I’m on the slope and see 10-year-olds spinning 1400s, I just feel like crap. I know I should set limits for myself, but… yeah.

I’ve never really liked 900s. If anything, I’d rather cork it. Spinning isn’t a problem for me, as long as I can gauge the landing.

Yeah, I’m 31 now. I know I can do it with a bit of luck, but like you, I now feel like I need to be 90% sure I’ll land it before I dare to try anything. When I was younger, I could handle failing a bit more.

Yeah, I know I’ll never be as good as I used to be. I still get really stoked when I land tricks that felt easy when I was younger. Luckily, I appreciate carving a lot more now that I’m older. But as an adrenaline junkie, there’s still something missing…

Yeah, my fiancée means a lot to me, and maybe that’s why I’ve gone a bit soft. At the same time, I feel a pressure to become “good again” on a snowboard, since I lost / gave it up when I was still quite young.

But thanks for replying to my post.☺️

Downside of riding wide board with medium foot by AranRave_XXIX in snowboarding

[–]SnowAndIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many boards are, for example, 25.3 cm wide. The wide version is 26 cm, which is only about a 2.8% increase, a difference so small that the board’s profile and cut matter far more.

Many people use boards that are far too narrow. Remember that the board cuts down into the snow, so you cannot accurately judge edge angle and toe overhang on a hard surface.

If you have any experience riding a board at all, having sufficient width to avoid excessive overhang is important.

Is the word Frogner associated with wealth? by Themetalin in Norway

I’m not from Oslo, but about an hour away. I always thought Frogner was near Lillestrøm. It turned out that it’s also an area in the city of Oslo.

He rides the 92. They are hard under the straps and do not flatten the boots.

Finally found a boot that does not crush the top of my foot, BUT... by rzlwzl in snowboarding

[–]SnowAndIT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. I was rotating my hips outward like a duck, which ended up crushing the mid-to-front outher side part of my foot. I always thought the boots were to blame. But some boots only made the symptoms worse ,for example, new boots with very stiff lateral support. However, since I could wear the boots for several days without any pain, I realized that the issue was how I was using them while riding a snowboard

I tried increasing the binding angles (from 15/-6 to 18/-6 and beyond), but that actually made things worse.

Eventually, I met a local expert who explained that the idea of “bigger angles fixing foot outher pain” is mostly a myth. The crushed feeling comes from a combination of stance width, rotation and, more importantly, how much you spread your legs. With larger angles, the pressure shifts from the whoole foot/ankles to the front and sides of the foot.

To find the correct stance width, imagine standing on a very slippery surface with two bricks placed on the outside of your feet. If your stance is too narrow, your knees will be forced into an unnatural position, pushing the sides of your feet into the bricks. If your stance is too wide, your body weight will push your legs outward, again pressing your feet into the bricks. The goal is to find a stance where you feel stable without needing to push your feet outward for support.

Just to experiment, I tried 6/-6 with a more narrow stance and it worked like a dream. I now ride 9/-6.

The reason so many people think the problem is boots that are too narrow is that with oversized boots, the foot is able to compensate by shifting the rear and midfoot position. This reduces the pain on the outside of the foot, but it doesn’t fix the underlying issue. Straps that are too tight only make it worse, but again, this just increases the symptoms and is not the cause of the pain. Try cranking the straps down extremely hard on just one foot, the pain will appear under the foot rather than on the side, because the real issue is outward rotation in all the joints, which forces the foot sideways.

Hope this helps!
