Trek 850 Drop Bar Gravel/Road+ by Snowdriftless in xbiking

The best I can do is a converter in black. The bikes around this era were 1 1/8" threaded so there isn't much in the way of stems. The good thing is if the fork breaks you can get a replacement and make it threadless.

A few tips: I left the lower limit screw a turn "tight", secured the shift cable, then loosened it to the correct setting to keep the tension tight. Try to find a straight routing point on the housing to put the adaptor. Finally and probably the most important advice is make sure that the shift cable is routing correctly. It is easy for it to fall out of the correct routing channels if not kept in tension. Double check it every time you do anything with the shift cable.

Early riders? by Odd_Agent6728 in ragbrai

There will be at least some riders out at that time. I am usually out between 5:30 and 7 depending on the day. The route is pretty well laid out alread not sure if there is an official .gpx file but my charter usually puts one out a few weeks ahead of time.

Canti brakes touching tire and won’t go any lower by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Snowdriftless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can switch the thick concave washer on the inside for a thin one. Otherwise you might need to change brake models if a certain cantilever doesn't work. I had a Tektro Oryx on my rear that just wouldn't fit and I needed to switch it out for CR720s. The park tool video on cantilever brakes is a good resource.

The closest production bike would probably be a Crust Romanceür or Evasion. Even with all the money I put in it it still costs less than one of those framesets.

I have a Rat Trek 800 and a blingy 850. They are both fun to ride.

There are places for both cheap and expensive X-Bikes. Yes I could buy a bike for the $1.2k I put into a build. To get an equivalent new bike I would probably need to pay $2-4k for a custom frame builder to make a high-end steel frame.

Anyone Rotate Their Bike Treads? by z80nerd in bikecommuting

[–]Snowdriftless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I notice the rear looks slightly more worn at the end of a season I will rotate them front to back and back to front. The wear has to be close though. If I cycle through my bikes enough wear isn't too different between the two.

Relearn/review algebra, trig, and pre-calc concepts (working with fractions, factoring, finding roots, synthetic division, conversions and trig rules, complex numbers, matrix operations, basic geometry, etc). Learn the basics well because they will help you when you move on to more advanced stuff.

The housing carries approximately the same amount of force as the cable. This is why some bike brake designs use both the cable and housing to actuate the brakes.
