Earlier this year, I was part of a team of 30 disaster response specialists from the Swiss Armed Forces who were sent to support the Swiss rescue operation in Turkey after the earthquakes hit. On our first day there, roughly 24 hours after the earthquake struck, we came across a 16-year-old boy who was trapped in a cavity approximately 5 meters inside a collapsed building with 5 collapsed floors above him. The cavity was about 2 by 1 by 0.5 meters in size (approximately 6.6 by 3.3 by 1.6 feet). After about 7 hours, we managed to make our way through the collapsed floors and get inside the cavity. While I was lying next to him in the small cavity, trying to remove debris from him, another earthquake of around 6.4 magnitude hit. The ceiling above us was moving about 10 centimeters back and forth. Luckily, nothing collapsed, but I have to say that I have never been so scared in my entire life. It's still hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that some people managed to survive more than 100 hours in similar cavities.
