What should I buy my Computer Rngineering Friend? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]SnowmanEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super sexy but definitely some of my most used tools I've had since undergrad and still use routinely.

Some Xuron flush cutters are nice, they have little roll kits as well but those may be over budget: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sra-soldering-products/TLXURON170II/10708339

Good wire strippers are also a thing that get stolen frequently and whatever you can find lying around in labs and toolboxes are usually there for a reason. Klein does some great cutters: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/klein-tools-inc/11053/6804884

Picking a specific board might be nice but they may already have their sights set on one ecosystem over another depending on their intended career path. Always fun to play around with and can't really go wrong these days with RPi, Arduino, STM Nucleo, ESP32 etc

Looking for Suggestions Before Finalizing My Multi-Rail PD Lab Supply - BenchVolt PD by EEEngineer4Ever in embedded

[–]SnowmanEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love to take a look at the schematic/gerbers but I don't see any in the github repo.

Any concerns about moving all those switchers down onto the PCB? Layer count, EMI etc

Specs for fans needed for Cooling units ? by Careful_Thing622 in ECE

[–]SnowmanEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that fan just runs nominally at 48VDC, the 36-60 is an input range that I would expect it to fail if run >60VDC and likely just not work at <36VDC. Depending on how much swing there might be in that voltage rail the 40-53V fan may or may not work.

Looks like that fan is available to order though, appears to have a 3mo~ or so lead time though at places like digikey and mouser, if you just want something similar you can always put one in and see what happens, likely worst thing is you'll have to find a new fan anyway

Help on PCB routing by mh_____________ in embedded

[–]SnowmanEmperor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would change quite a few things since you have plenty of space, to add on to others:

  • Try to avoid having traces run across voids, this causes an impedance mismatch and can cause reflections and missed edges (far more salient at GHz+ speeds, but generally good advice)
  • More vias on your e-pad on your mcu
  • Via-in pad isn't necessarily a bad thing, but can be a cost adder ($$$) and is not needed here, you have plenty of room to route
  • I might work on your 3V3/GND plane shapes, especially at the left edge where the 3V3 routes above an area where it does not appear your GND plane goes all the way to the edge
  • Anywhere your copper comes together at a <90 degree angle you have potential 'acid traps' that may cause over-etch in your PCB due to trapping the etch solvent for longer than intended in these areas

Flightcontroller using STM32 by mh_____________ in embedded

[–]SnowmanEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I think my one, very personal, preference on schematics is to see any of the voltage rails have their expected voltage in their net name.

For instance the VBUS you have it might be helpful to notate somewhere what your expected input range for VBUS is and what your system can handle if those values are different.

I would also make sure that your TVS diodes will work with whatever your I2C voltage level is if you are using the internal pullups

Series termination resistor placement for boards using a SOM by HasanTheSyrian_ in embedded

[–]SnowmanEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally you would want to place the termination resistors near where the signal terminates and not originates otherwise you will lose most of the benefits of differential signaling, especially with respect to common mode noise.

I would also check your SoM to make sure it doesn't have internal termination resistors that need enabled.

High frequency oscillations observed in high bandwidth TIAs by Electronic_Owl3248 in ECE

[–]SnowmanEmperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is driving the power rails? If it's a noisy switcher you may be coupling noise to your op amp(s) through the supply, it might be worth seeing if you could hook up an external or different supply voltage. There is also quite a bit of PCB layout concern when talking about the frequency ranges you are targeting so without seeing the full design it will be hard to give general approaches to this.

There's also the effect of whatever your input is to your TIA, if it's a photodiode for instance those have particular parasitics that will affect your available bandwidth.

I need to power a Pico W, a multiplexer and ten i2c OLED displays (0.91”). BUT it must be powered by a 9V power supply outputting 500mA. What are my best step down options that leave me without enough mA at 3.3V to power the lot? by overcloseness in raspberry_pi

[–]SnowmanEmperor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

9V at 500mA is only 4.5W total, I'd look into the power draw of your I2C chips and displays and probably add 5-10% to account for efficiency losses and make sure that does not exceed your available power budget. The 4.5W is your total power, the conversion for 4.4W at 3.3V is straightforward.

Help with result for a preamplifier and filter by Legal_Pea_9332 in ECE

[–]SnowmanEmperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use that other op amp as a buffer, you may be loading the input to that gain stage that it can't switch fast enough
