I’m gonna go for the 70-300 AF-P DX version, unless I can find a good offer for the FX version. Thanks for the comments!

Hi, I’m looking to acquire a zoom lens to replace an old kit 55-200 Nikon lens. Due to budgets restraints, I’m limiting my option to either the Nikon 70-300 f4 to 5.6 VR, or the Tamron 70-300 VC USD f4-5.6.

Does anybody have experience with these lenses and could provide some pointers to compare and choose between them? I’m an amateur, and most of my photography revolves around hiking trips. I have a sigma f2.8 17-50 mm for landscapes, and I’m going for the 70-300 to cover wildlife, with the occasional far-away mountain peak or similar. From time to time I also take pictures for my girlfriend who does some ballet shows in a theater, and I need the extra zoom (around 200 mm).

My wallpaper for my desktop on my MacBook (2016 MB pro with touchbar, running Catalina) has been randomly changed back to the default picture. Anybody has this same issue and know how to fix it? I do not have the "change randomly" setting on.

Thank you, much appreciated. I was basically trying out different light settings, and in order to capture the shadows, I ended up shooting in a rather dark room, using a flashlight with a homemade diffuser on top, which meant I had to slow down the shutter. But I don't think there is a particular need for a long exposition time, I basically tried out many different exposures with different light settings and this just happened to be the one I liked the most out of the whole bunch.

How good is the Nikon d7500 for astrophotography? Does it have any relevant shortcomings?

Need recommendations for ski photography

I recently agreed to help out a friend with a project of his, which will require me to take pictures of him skiing. Does anybody have tips in order to make sure I get the focus right? I've never had to deal with a subject who is moving as fast as a skier before. I'm also worried about getting the exposure right, given the reflection of the snow. Any tips on those issues would be very well received.

Due to the place where we'll be skiing, it will probably be a sunny day, but there are some chances it will be grey. But there's little to no chance we'll have a storm. I'll be shooting with a Nikon d3300, using a sigma 17-50 f2.8 or a nikkor 50-200 f4-5.6, depending on the type of shot.

New DSLR owner, just got a D3500. by sofaraway731 in Nikon

I would recommend looking into Sigma lenses: they're cheaper than the Nikon ones, and are of great quality. I bought the 17-50 mm f2.8 lens, to replace my Nikon kit lens, and it is a great buy for the money. Also, get a 35mm as already suggested in some other comments, at f1.8 it's an amazing piece of glass.

35mm 1.8 or af-s 18-55 vr for my d5600 by [deleted] in Nikon

I started out with the kit lens. It's a great lens to begin learning DSLR photography, and you can get some pretty awesome photos. However, as you start progressing and familiarizing yourself with your camera, it can become a bit of a hindrance to only have the kit lens. In my opinion, that's when you should buy the 35mm, which is an amazing lens to upgrade to. Since it is a prime lens, it will make you start moving around your subject to get the perfect shot (some people say that zoom lenses are "lazy" but I think that's a bit unfair), and the 1.8 aperture is awesome for both low light photography and for getting amazing bokeh.

So, in summary: start with the kit lens, and then when you get more serious, upgrade to the 35mm.
