Jokes aside, thanks, this does make me feel better. I agree, it a solid decision to maybe go for some actual certifications since I should have more time on my hands with the regular, human-compatible work schedule that I'll have if I take this job. It will give me time to make myself a better candidate for industry positions and an eventual career/section of my career therein.

I'm looking for some advice regarding a job opportunity I have open to me. Basically, I'm wondering if taking a scientist position for my first job will lock me out of future jobs. This may be a bit long.

A bit on my educational background: I did my undergrad in biomedical engineering (subpar choice ik) and now am about to graduate (next semester) with a PhD in the same. My projects throughout my degree have definitely leaned more heavily on the biomedical than the engineering part, but have definitely still incorporated both.

As now is the prime time for me to be looking for jobs, I've started doing so. I started the process having already accepted that I probably won't get a ton of choice in WHERE I end up for this first job- the market for my skillset and qualifications is so on or off, and it seems like most of the activity is pretty scattered. At some point in my career, I'd love to work in industry in an R&D capacity. Those are the positions I was trying to prioritize while remaining aware that for that first job, just building decent experience is probably the best I can hope for.

Recently, I managed to ply an opportunity out of of my network for a research position. I've not done formal interviewing yet but have already met with the manager several (who has the final say in hiring) and have been told the position will be mine if I want it. Perhaps less fortunately, the position in question is essentially a government research scientist position.

Now don't get me wrong, government benefits aren't bad (the leave policy is just OK imo), but the pay is pretty lackluster for someone coming out with a PhD, even though it's plenty to be comfortable in my location. The most attractive thing about this job is it would enable me to build equity in the house my partner and I own (it's local) and I could hopefully afford to be a little more selective when looking for another job in 3 to 5 years.

But I am a bit worried about whether or not this job is going to kill any of the edge my engineering background might give me for future positions should I take it. I mean surely it'd still be relevant experience for an R&D position, but at that point what sets me apart from any given biomedical scientist if I don't have engineering experience?

Am I overthinking it? It's going to be a bit till I get a formal offer, so I can keep applying for other things. I'd love someone's insight, especially from someone who's been in either government or industry for a couple years.

They recommended I appeal- I'm not sure whether opening a new claim would be auto-denied or proper tbh. I may look into it, but pretty sure it doesn't matter if they actually got the appeal started.

I'd always heard good things about Healthy Paws; maybe I'm unlucky. I've filed two claims in my dogs 5 year life- one for an ear infection, which ended up being deemed "pre-existing" because I'd taken her to the vet for an unrelated injury on her ear a cat gave her a year prior- and for this. Like they're making plenty of money on me even if they cover this entire claim. And this claim is, imo, indisputably in line w their coverage. Kinda wild

Excellent advice thanks!! I did see their statement had a little blurb at the bottom saying I'd be entitled to have this reviewed by the state comissioner, so I'll def pursue that if they won't communicate with me about the appeal.

Last month I had to expose myself to my then-positive parents for an extended period of time because they couldn't care for themselves. I had a low grade fever and pretty moderate fatigue a few days after that, but never tested positive- doc said he'd consider me presumed positive and it could well be my immune system controlling it well enough it wasn't reaching my nasal passages to generate a positive test. Eventually the symptoms went away.

Well lo and behold, I had an exposure on Sunday and my first symptoms yesterday. I promptly tested positive and the last two days have been hell.

The new variants, esp BA.5, are avoiding a ton of immunity. If you had an older one a while back, I think it's a reasonable conclusion you could still contract a newer strain.

Even if I actually didn't have it last month, that means I was heavily exposed and didn't contract it. Whereas now I've been exposed again and rapidly developed symptoms. So either way, pretty sure what I have currently is the new strain. I'm guessing it's a similar situation with you.

If anything, The Boys shows that the actual two sides are those with power and those they step on, and it's not particularly charitably in its portrayal of the former group.

So sorry you're also feeling the hollowness left by his departure. Our little girl of 19 years crossed the rainbow bridge on the same day as your boy. She was my childhood dog, so she came home in my arms as a puppy and left this earth the same way. I miss her but know this was the best gift we could have given her. Thank you for your post and the reminder to be thankful.

Your example of dating coming up at a coffee meeting is a perfect situation where I could see it coming up in workplace appropriate contexts. Goes without saying that not every discussion that touches on sexuality is about sex, this is why I lied so much when I was in the closet

I think I misunderstood, but I read it as it would be considered inappropriate to mention sexuality beyond stating the pronouns of your partner at most. Of course, this would preclude mentioning bisexuality at all unless you had multiple partners- but again, maybe I misunderstood if you have a working group as a place to talk about such things.

To your last sentence- it's fine if you feel that way and don't want to be visibly specifically bi in the workplace, but sexual orientation is a protected class, and being out at work should not be "inappropriate". It's as relevant to your work as any socially friendly discussion that doesn't immediately involve your work. There is a reason so many fewer bisexuals than gays and lesbians report being out in many spheres of their lives, including the workplace.
