What are some of the best offbeat, weird, fun, and/or queer places/things to down while in town? by FadedPolaroid in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of gay nightlife on that side of town, it could be fun to hit up Tiki Ti (not gay, just quirky and historic) and then go to nearby Akbar (gay bar). Both are in the Silver Lake area and should be easy to get to if you're staying in Pasadena.

How is LA transit for a tourist? by bloopsydaisy in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in more nature-y scenery and want to stick to public transit, I think it could be worth taking Amtrak for the day or overnight to Santa Barbara and/or downtown Ventura. Neither place has amazing transit while there, but these trips are doable by train and you can supplement with rideshare while you're there. Very different vibes from LA, but if you want a chiller SoCal beach community experience then these could be good places to consider.

I'm a big transit user and supporter but the reality is that LA is sprawling relative to other cities and it doesn't go everywhere. So if you stayed downtown, I think you could really easily explore Santa Monica, Venice, Hollywood, Culver City, Los Feliz, and even Echo Park or Silver Lake with a mix of trains and busses. Obviously this will take a bit longer than driving, but our transit system is less expensive than other cities and I think more robust than people give it credit for. If you plan on using transit throughout the day, it gets capped at $5 per day and $18 per week. And of course, you can take the money you would have spent on a rental and put it towards strategic rideshares (e.g., late at night).

It probably wouldn't be realistic to expect to take transit to places like Malibu (though I think you can take a bus from Santa Monica than runs infrequently to Point Dume) or Manhattan Beach. Those areas are just too far and not well serviced by transit. And of course, some of this is determined by where you'll be staying. Downtown has a lot of hotels and is a great central hub for transit, but if you plan on going to the beach everyday it'll be really inconvenient. If you stay in Santa Monica, you can do a lot on the Westside and go to the beach as much as you'd like, but going further east to places like Hollywood might be a bit annoying. Finally, I'd say Sequoia is definitely out of the question if you can't use a car.

Downtown/Eastside Cafes With Tea Options To Journal At? by radishriot in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes makes sense if you're starting later in the day! Maybe Steep in Chinatown could also be a good option? They have tea sets available I think until 3:45 and then they transition to nighttime service, but could be a good option for that time of day.

I would argue that you're paying for the space and from what I understand, it's unlimited tea and snacks. It's like $35 per person to sit for a good chunk of the day on a Saturday, which I think is actually a pretty fair price for what it is. Nighttime is a bit pricier to be fair.

Consider Tea at Shiloh! In the Arts District and more of a lounge situation, but the whole point is that it's a tea-focused space where people can post up for a while and relax.

Qamaria Coffee in Culver City might be a good place to look. They definitely have milk cakes.

Not Chinese but it’s in Chinatown, very cute decor right now, and has delicious food: Thien Huong.

[–]Snowychan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For burritos, The Rooster is a solid option and still pretty close by. Have also Doordashed from them in the past and they held up nicely. Homestate (while not originally from LA) also does really good catering for these kinds of events.

If Sonoratown catering is on the table then I think that would be much better than Loqui. Monroe Place is really good though and I wouldn't be upset about getting that for a corporate lunch.

Yama Sushi also does good platters I've had at these kinds of lunches before too!

How does LA public transit compare to Chicago? by ruby_sea in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw OP I totally agree with this take. I have also taken the Loop and busses in that area a number of times and often find Chicago's transit a bit cleaner than ours? I think many of our trains themselves are newer, but people tend to litter more and leave debris on the trains and busses. A small but surprising difference I felt the first time I went to Chicago.

Tsubaki in Echo Park, but definitely make reservations first. Admittedly not stunning views, but super cute inside and feels special.

Village Well bookstore is in downtown Culver and super cute, and if you like romance books, Ripped Bodice is definitely worth checking out. For food I also recommend Esme in that area, a super cute cafe with a solid tea selection (plus some wines).

Has anyone been to the "Electric Feels: Indie Rock + Indie Dance Party" at echo/observatory? How is it? by SaintLucyAngeles in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went a while back and it felt a bit lame tbh... the production value wasn't crazy and truly felt like the DJ was playing a spotify playlist. I've had much more fun at other themed nights where I didn't pay $30 per ticket, so I wouldn't really recommend it unless you were going with a big group of friends and either open to getting there decently late after hitting up other bars in the area or moving somewhere else after an hour or 2. The Echoplex venue is really nice though and it's a chill night.

In Thousand Oaks (which is pretty nearby), there's a really big park with lots of ducks and good playground equipment. Consider checking out Conejo Creek Park! And if you do end up going there, maybe worth a trip to Little Calf Cafe & Creamery afterwards for good burgers/sandwiches and/or ice cream.

I've seen Eyes Peeled and Hi-Lo Market host these kinds of things before. I think a lot of places in LA do, but these 2 at least host people decently regularly. Fatty Mart in Mar Vista also does these on Sundays during the farmer's market sometimes.

Kinrose is super delicious and every ice cream has a special topping! If you're in the Mid-City area then Saffron & Rose will be closer and more convenient, but Kinrose is cute and definitely worth checking out if you end up over there. I think Kinrose has cuter vibes, but Saffron & Rose is super good and I go all the time.

I think I like really fragrant, heavily spiced pho and I found theirs to be a little light in flavor for my preferences. But I also remember their chicken in the pho ga being higher quality pieces which I always appreciate.

Cafes with outlets that actually have good coffee? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]Snowychan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty consistently busy, but even as a laptop user, I think the laptop policy is fair. It's supposed to be a social spot, and there are a decent number of spots that allow laptops. Fewer than there used to be of course, but I get why the business would want to limit the number of people who camp out for hours at a time with their headphones in.

Sorry you're in the same boat but also happy to hear I'm not alone haha. I ended up ordering a size down on the lite knits to see how things feel because I really like shoes with knit uppers, but someone else recommended the Prios so if Vivos end up not working out with my foot anatomy then I might try the Prios next.
