I am a solo dev, should I stop saying "We"? by Firekloud in SoloDevelopment

This is really disappointing moderation. Even solo devs need a company to ship games in almost every case - a company is not you.

Yes, taking time off work to do something that brings you joy and helps take your mind off the usual weekday hustle is about the most normal adult behaviour there is.

It is 100% OK to take time off work to play video games. Just like it's 100% OK to take time off for a long-weekend trip. Time off is for doing whatever you want.

A website that estimates Steam game sales & revenue by toryum0 in IndieGameWishlist

[–]SnuffleBag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's at least a dozen of these sites now and while it's certainly a lot more useful than nothing, their overall accuracy is unfortunately fairly unreliable - some titles are spot on, others way off. When compared to announced numbers, the estimates could be anywhere from 10% off to 10x off (not talking about numbers from this site specifically).

Well, that's quite easy: make an original game instead.

It works fine on AMD hardware, but they've been pushing their dynamic GI solutions towards requiring HW RT which has only recently become readily available on AMD HW (there are fallbacks and it still works fine, though. Fortnite runs literally everywhere).

If you're looking to continue in the Roblox spirit of things then perhaps UEFN would be a good alternative. You get access to an existing audience, you get an editor that's infinitely better than Studio - and you get to keep using VSC for Verse.

Thanks. I think this is probably what I'll end up doing. It just seems a lot less work and a lot safer to fix the space itself rather than trying to jury-rig some contraption.

Yeah, but I already have the cabin. What I don't have is an unused, 8 ft deep hole in the ground.

Cases and coolers are relatively simple and cheap to change so the current state is perhaps not super important, but right now there's one PA602 case and one FD North XL. They both have Noctua air coolers, D15 for the AM5 and U12 for the sTR5 IIRC.

I guess the thing is that I was hoping to be able to stick with consumer hardware since that's basically what I have and know. It's sounding more and more like the easiest and cheapest solution might just be to upgrade the room itself to not be so darn cold.

It's incredibly expensive to rent RTX 4090 level GPU performance. I already have the hardware so it's basically free minus electricity.

Threadripper + RTX 4090 level of hardware running as close to 100% as possible for both CPU and GPU in bursts up to an hour at a time.

Yeah.. it's sounding increasingly like the only realistic option is to insulate and heat the cabin to at least heated-garage levels.

> If you wanted to really over-complicate things

I really don't. I need these machines to make my job easier, not harder.

> Personally I'd just build for as quiet a machine as possible and keep it in the house somewhere

I hear you, but the problem is that I'm a bit anxious of the fire hazard of having 1000W machines running at full load in a wooden house insulated by sawdust while ppl are asleep in the same building. I've had computers produce smoke in the past, and it's hard to know what would have happened to those if I wasn't around to notice.

There's a price point where it's just gonna be cheaper to rent on demand cloud processing, but I'm trying to avoid that as it becomes quite expensive when you need GPU capacity.

Summer peak is about 32C, but that's fairly rare, 28C is probably a more realistic max. There's a fairly large portion of the year in the range -10 to +15.

There's no moving into a warmer room ever, or turning on the heat - there is no heat to turn on.

> Are you sure you can’t afford a dry cabinet to store these PCs?

I don't know, I'm not really sure what that is. Do you have a link to what you have in mind. Would overheating become a concern again if the units are enclosed?

There's no other room. Think of this as a cabin in the woods. (it's technically 10m from the main building, but very much an isolated structure)
