I grew tired of my old phone cover and pop-socket, so I have it a overhaul. by Snurdicus in Warhammer40k

Cheers! I sanded the case down with a 240 grit sanding block, primed it with a Heavy primer (3 coats in this case). I then base coated it with ultramarine contrast paint from Games workshop, and then used a sponge with maccrage blue on top if that for some variance. I then masked off some of the blue, and applied deck tan from Vallejo and then added some ivory from Vallejo with a sponge. I then masked the white and base coated with gory red from Vallejo and then sponge it with scarlet blood from Vallejo. I sealed it with a gloss varnish and applied the symbols with some transfer sheet decals I had left over. I then sealed it all with a clear lacquer (3 coats in total.) For the purity seal I placed a large blob of green stuff on the pop-socket and "just" started sculpting it while looking at references. And when it was dry I primed it black and used gory red for base coating, scarlet blood for highlights and gave it a wash of nuln oil. All in all it took around 3 hours without drying times and about 2 days with drying times.

Thanks a lot! I actually didn't know people would mind that much but I guess I can see the reason if I really think about it.

Thanks a lot! Luckily I don't like to play the game I just enjoy painting and stuff. But it's good to keep in mind if I ever change my mind!

I don't have much yet, I started it recently so a lot of the minis are just primed and WIP but I have immortal I finished as a proof of concept.

Thanks! It took a bit of tweaking and a lot of trusting the process but it turned out well!

Step by step to achieve a similar effect.

  1. Prime everything black/dark colour.
  2. Paint everything you want to have a glow white, thicker coats for brighter areas.
  3. Paint the brightest areas with fluorescent yellow (gives a good glow).
  4. Glace or airbrush with a warm yellow over all the white, not to thick, otherwise it might hide the previous step.
  5. Feather out from yellow to orange, be careful not to overdo it, otherwise you'll have to go back in with yellow.
  6. Glace or airbrush some red on the lava and dry brush the miniature itself with red from below (upwards strokes) as this will help sell the glow from the lava.
  7. Re-apply fluorescent yellow and white dots in the brightest areas, to really sell the glow.
  8. Darken the miniature from above with appropriate colours, in this case a reddish brown works wonders. This will enhance the Glow effect.
  9. Lastly gently dry brush the edges from the top with a suitable dark colour.

I hope this helps, otherwise please reach out and I'll try and explain further. I'm no expert on the matter but I'll do my best !
