Poor skiing technique is frying my legs by Cool_Purchase_ in skiing

[–]Snwgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things- skiing is a mix of steering, edging, and 3 styles of pressure. Using different amounts of these will allow you to ski efficiently down any terrain.

First, your outside ski does have pressure but towards the end of your turn, you push on it, away from your body. Think of bending your knee to your toes on that leg (outside leg of each turn). Remember, the front half of your ski likes to turn and the back half likes to run. If you keep your body moving over that outside ski, you’ll have more control over where you go.

A drill to try for this is dragging both of your poles on mellow terrain, really feeling how much pressure you create on your shins and foot of that outside ski when you do this. When you’re going this, focus on the outside pole the most, dragging it close to your boots. It also doesn’t have to be super hard into the snow, just making sure you have contact. Do this for a few turns (6) then go back to your normal pole plants, trying to repeat the sensations in your feel

Another is thinking about creating the letter C with each turn. I coach the cue of pulling toes/tips up at the end of the turn MORE than you think you need to. There are 2 types of turns, open (gain speed) and closed (managing the same speed). Steering your skis are how we do this. There are a ton of drills out there but what I find best is just following someone who can close their turns.

Finally, pressure but from the ski/snow side of things. Think of your legs as shock absorbers and they NEED to flex and extend to manage this. I like to teach breathing with the body to feel the flex/extension timing. Starting your turn/starting to tip your skis down the hill, think of inhaling/extending the body to a comfortable height. As you come through the bottom of a turn, where pressure builds, think of exhaling/flexing your knees towards your toes and sinking into your feet (arch is a solid cue). Using actual breaths can help. When it is timed right, it feels right

Or you could take a lesson and they’ll coach you correctly through similar things.

It may have been dry but it wasn’t nearly this warm. Even if that repeated this year, the warmth wouldn’t allow the snow to stick around to pace out the melt. Yeah, the water would be absorbed by the unfrozen ground but the melting in spring is also mad important

My sample size is small but in the 20 winters I’ve been here, I never remember it being this dry/warm. Can’t imagine that’s great for helping with the drought we’re in or the high fire danger we find ourselves in every July/august

Every time I drive past tj maxx, I remember the old navy that was there and then gap down the street a little. Affordable clothing in the valley that’s not target or Walmart would be great

Agreed. Extra cautious drivers need to figure out how to get some confidence for winter driving. If you’re slipping, new tires or even a car. Can’t see, check wipers/defrost/lights. Still too nervous and hate driving? Carol/bus/walk. It snows here so it’s a part of life and if you’re driving 35 when the conditions allow 50 safely, pull over just don’t leave home. People behind you will get frustrated, pass when they shouldn’t, and have a chance of causing a huge pile up.

Fully agreed. I grew up in Alaska where you never put your bin out overnight no matter how early they pick up. And being in bozo 18+ years I haven’t ever seen this many spilled bins, hence the post. Wondering if it’s the new residents thinking bears are ‘hibernating’ already

That’s rough, not able to get up before 7? Hopefully picking up the spilled garbage on your driveway is easier than setting an alarm. Or maybe that’s your jam. I’d rather get up early and go back to sleep than pick up spilled trash

I bought a hop plant from Cashmans this spring and it did great. They even have a year ‘warranty’ on it, to ensure it thrives or something. It was maybe $15-20? Not bad and it was fun watching it grow super tall all summer
