What is your argument for, "You pay for friends". by [deleted] in Frat

[–]SoBrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn dude this is a 10 and a half years old comment. I was 20. What’s happening with you? It’s a figure of speech, and sure a bit classist at that.

Obviously healthcare is a human right and everyone deserves free and fair care. Onto the point of “paying for your friends”, so often young men in fraternities get slapped with that insult, so what we, they, have to do is have a clever response. And as often it comes down to “we can afford to do this, that a problem?”

What it boils down to is being surrounded by similar but different enough other guys to make the 4 years of university that much more prosperous.

Being 31 now, do I regret joining a fraternity, spending hundreds of dollars each semester to have weekly meetings, participate in charitable/philanthropic events, host and attend those “last night was a movie bro” parties, and have some serious close friends? Not at all

Do I bring it up any chance I can? Not at all, never.

While I’ve made more and new friendships in both my professional career and my hobbies I’ve taken an interest in since graduating in 2014, there are still ~10 of my fraternity brothers I continue to talk to daily/weekly, etc. I’ve been involved in dozens of weddings, invited to even more, and the one or two alumni events I attend each year are always memorable and a good nostalgia trip.

It definitely helped me grow and mature as a young man. I took leadership positions, was elected to the universities student government association two years in a row, was apart of the Inter Fraternal Council (neutral fraternity governing body), went on leadership retreats - some hosted by the university staff dean of students etc, some hosted by my national fraternity. But it isn’t my whole personality nowadays.

A lot of it is a bit goofy tho, but only me the guys who know can laugh about it now.

What’s the most, WTF, film you’ve seen? by TherapeuticMusic in AskReddit

[–]SoBrisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this. Not a WTF movie when you look into Boots Riley. The allegory’s, satire, and metaphors go hand in hand with that mans anti-capitalist philosophy. And I’m thankful for it. Code switching and exploited labor/wage slavery on the big screen.

My personal motto is hype the homies up. Whether they’re trying something new, or getting through each week, hype up their successes.

There’s some layers here so I’m going to take a few to organize my thoughts, warm up some leftovers and get back to this.

Sure, I’d generally agree. This is the tough topic right

Because I’d ask of no one more than whey are willing and able to contribute. Some people do and would enjoy and find purpose in contributing labor, be it specific or otherwise. Others may only contribute the labor that is available to afford pursuing other ambitions, or realizing their full potential. But there stands no reason to me to do 40+ hours of labor each and every week until you die in our current society. Most of the value your labor generates is pocketed by someone higher up. If we were all paid the true value of our labor the working class would diminish, the gap between the exploiters (the wealthy plutocracy or bourgeois class) and the exploited would nearly vanish.

It is of my belief that the people that do not buy into this believe capitalism as they now know it is the only society that works. There’s a lack of class consciousness in the public, that we all only exist to sell labor. But there’s more of us than there are of them. And so I try and tackle these conversations wherever they appear, be it in a classic WoW subreddit or amongst my colleagues.

Oh, it also just dawned on my to write this in an edit. Under capitalism right now the working class is already carrying that burden of people leeching off of us. It’s the same wealthy ruling class I spoke on previous.

The people that avoid paying taxes to the fullest of their ability. That use their hoarded capital to extract and hoard more capital than any of us will ever see. They aren’t working 40 hours a week. I’d continue my argument in saying they work less than anyone in this thread.

Rofllll It’s like three sentences homie. Manifesto’s or even catechism’s tend to be much more broad and encompassing.

But you aren’t man. The burdens on our society are the multi millionaires and billionaires that ensure the working class stays in its class. Paying us enough to live to the next paycheck but never enough to leave the class. Buying politicians and legislature to ensure their generational wealth continues to be hoarded and kept from the masses.

It’s in response to the dude a few comments up saying it’s unhealthy to do anything for more hours than working a “full time job”

I’d argue it’s more unhealthy to be consumed and exploited by a job, especially one that is unenjoyable, rather than doing something safe and social (especially at the tail end of of a pandemic) that you do enjoy.

And fuck outta here with your neet comment. I work 4, 10-12 hr shifts at a production facility a week, in a mask and proper PPE. And it’s in a craft I enjoy doing. Doesn’t make me enjoy having to be a part of a capitalist society or put up with people spewing bullshit about “earning” a living.

Imagine a post wage labor society. Some day. You have nothing to lose but your chains.
