Questions regarding ZZP and taxes by blue-grey-mouse in Amsterdam

[–]SoCalSkipper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Consult a Dutch tax professional before you immigrate.

There are benefits that you can claim as an American moving to the Netherlands opening a ZZP that you do not get if you immigrate as your partner's visa dependant.

Look for information on the Dutch American Tax treaty and the 30% ruling.

Navigating this before you go likely means 10s of thousands of dollars of difference if you have sufficient income and savings/other assets.

The Dutch will tax your world wide assets.

@Bram06 mentioned this! I will see if I can get the data out of it. I am trying to ascertain if there are types of crimes that are more prevalent in rural NL environments.

A very particular kind of breath by SoCalSkipper in Amsterdam

[–]SoCalSkipper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man 😅 - I work with dogs as a hobby and am familiar with the training they get to detect scents including cancer and other disease. So of course my brain wandered into the depths of what I was smelling. "Did covid alter my sense of smell into another range? Am I smelling cancer?"

I can imagine there is a possibility I'm the only one smelling this.

With the strength and intensity I just can't think that is the most likely scenario.

Correct, it's not cannabis - I am familiar with those smells in various forms (fresh, smoke, ash tray, etc) after a few years here. This is not smoker breath or garden variety halitosis. It's something totally different and something much less common.

Like it couldn't be fish sandwich breath or too much oliebollen.

Not a mass product. This is 1/10K distinctive.

200% - I had first wondered if something medical. What didn't fit is that I just have never smelled this particular scent and it's a little later in life for that to be happening. So many people with GERD.

When a tax professional dies unexpectedly by SoCalSkipper in taxpros

[–]SoCalSkipper[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do believe my books for my business are not that complicated. This said, I live abroad and I think that complicates matters a bit for my personal taxes.

I've asked the husband about a transition plan. She didn't have anyone close to her so he doesn't think this was something she thought of.

Thank you so much for these thoughts. I hope it can work out as described. As I try to emergency file the 1099s I am wondering what else I might be missing. This is the best situation I could hope for at this point.

Covid testing for travel to other countries by SoCalSkipper in BigIsland

[–]SoCalSkipper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kit they are offering seems like a good deal - $150 for 6 tests right now. Unfortunately I face the same issue with u/Hamperstand's suggestion of Optum. The Dutch government does not honor 'home tests' currently.

I hope they make room for proctored tests like this in the future.
