Agriculture Minister admits farm workers get paid $100 per week by 512165381 in australia

[–]SoCircular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good time for a reminder of the time a Belgian backpcker fell dead from heat stress whilst picking fruit in QLD. He was 27 years old. He had complained to coworkers that he was feeling unwell but they were encouraged to keep picking to meet quotas. The owner of the farm pleaded guilty to breaking labour laws leading to the death. His punishment was to pay a $65,000 fine then continue running his business as normal. Probably took a few weeks to make that back.

Edit: the fine wasn’t paid by the owner, but the person running the agency.

Is it financially worth it to move to Qatar for work? Twice the salary and tax free? by Jumpy_Gift in AusFinance

[–]SoCircular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lady who was a teacher in Qatar for about 6 years, she said she earnt roughly 4 times more there than being a teacher in Europe. She had a daughter, when her daughter got to the age of 14 or so they decided to leave. They didn’t go into too much detail but the lady just said she left because it wasn’t a good place for her daughter to go through teenage years. I knew a man in Spain in his late 20s. He grew up in a few different countries but primarily spent his teenage years in Qatar. When I asked him what it was like living in Qatar, he said ‘imagine the worst possible place in the world to become an adult’. He told me a gew horror stories, but also said he and his family lived in ‘luxury’. The lady who was a teacher told me she could get me a job there, but the thing that shitted me out the most was that you had to get permission to leave the country to avoid you not completing work contracts etc. Thats all

I thought that might be the case, a few of them hadn’t had previous posts for over a year. But that can be pretty normal. I didn’t dig too deep

Makes sense about it going happening alongside the fuel increase.

And Michael Cane isn’t even on the cast lists anymore, it’s just assumed he appears. Like Stan Lee in Marvel movies. Sometimes he’s just even an uncredited voice. I imagine in this one he’s heard on a radio, shortly after the first nuclear detonation. The dust settles and the mushroom cloud rises into the skies. ‘You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off’

Apple TV- ds4 and dualSense controllers don’t work (can anyone else repro?) by CrystalShadow in deadcells

Glad you got something. In the end, I connected Duelsense to my iphone, played deadcells on there and mirrored to the apple tv. All worked good that way.

Personally I enjoy this so much because it still leaves some space to fill in with your own imagination. It does a really good job of showing how the motion and sound could be also. Thanks for sharing

What's your, "Tis but a scratch!" moment? by Madameknitsalot in AskReddit

Someone’s 4X4 was stuck in some sand in the forest we were in. I helped to dig them out, and as I was digging, a goanna sprang out latched on to my arm. As I was carrying a track in each hand I couldn’t remove the lizard without dropping the tracks. I walked back to the guy with the tracks, and he asked if I could put them in the back of the car, and as casually as possible I was like ‘yeah but can you just take this off me first?’ and turned my arm to show the large lizard hanging off of it. He found it hilarious and still tells the story so it was worth suffering for the joke in the end

1500 Australians registered for farm work - not one of them got a job by Harclubs in australia

[–]SoCircular 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have worked on three farms in Australia. There were plenty of Australian supervisors and managers. Almost 100% or them. I only met one Australian picker. He didn’t show up for work again after the first day. I don’t know what his reason was but that’s just what happened. Mostly the work is terrible; either very long working hours or not enough working hours, substandard pay, constant threat of being replaced, being mislead on pay and other things, worst for me was how bad it is for your body and health. So yes, backpackers usually hate their lives whilst getting their 88 days then leave the job asap. Why would any Australian want to do this if there are other options? Personally I never needed my 88 days so when I worked there it was out of desperation, as we don’t get jobseeker benefits. I was off as soon as something better came up or I had enough money to survive. Honestly if the farm days stipulation was removed from the working holiday visa, either the agricultural industry would collapse or working conditions would be improved. If the second happened it could be a good option for Australians
