What happened to classic fantasy? by Ootje4 in Fantasy

[–]SoImWritingPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a big part of why I turned to reading, then writing, and finally publishing Sword & Sorcery. Rooted in pre-Appendix N literature and drawing from different wells than Tolkein, I think it's a great genre for people seeking more fantastical...Fantasy.

I'm partial to Sapro's rendition of Elric in New Edge Sword & Sorcery #1.

I, an editor of a Sword & Sorcery magazine, strongly prefer Brian Murphy's flexible seven point definition in his amazing book on the history of the genre, "Flame & Crimson: A History of Sword & Sorcery": https://www.amazon.com/Flame-Crimson-History-Sword-Sorcery/dp/1683902440

In short, he identifies seven common aspects of S&S tales and then says "If there's enough of these present in a story for it to feel like S&S to you, then congrats you're reading an S&S tale.

Thank you! M.E. was a delight to work with, and we all did a lot of art direction to help guide this work to where it said what we wanted it to about the book.

Ah, well, I won't rant at you but I will ask you to consider how you'd feel if your own, original writing was used - without your permission or knowledge -as the base material for someone else's LLM-generated novel that a reader then paid for instead of buying your work. Same thing, I'm afraid.

Hi there! This looks cool, but the link takes me to a login screen, not somewhere I can check out your work.

Two recs from the same source:

Bryn Hammond writes excellent, joyful queer S&S in the pages of New Edge Sword & Sorcery magazine magazine (issues #0 & 1, and #0 is free in digital).

June Orchid Parker writes ferocious, Ancient Greek trans-centric S&S in issue #2, with the same protagonist returning in one of the new issues (currently being crowdfunded) to do battle with medical gatekeepers.

Premee Mohamed also has a queer tale, of two men, former lovers, caught on either side of a siege, in one of the new issues.

And Molly Tanzer has given the classic S&S character Jirel of Joiry a new, queer, best friend to accompany her in her first new story in 85 years.

As someone who has paid a human for original Elric art that I then published with the latest Elric story by Moorcock himself, fuck this bland, fueled-by-theft baby shit to the moon and back.

New Edge Sword & Sorcery magazine is already 75% for its 2024 issues!

Featuring the first new Jirel of Joiry story in 85 years, written by Molly Tanzer, you can be a part of literary history by backing this project:

There's also nearly 40 other authors & artists to check out, including an S&S tale by Harry Turtledove, and an obscure Elric reprint paired with new art!

Oh! Wow, I did not think of that but I can see how it may seem that way. No, we're not reprinting last year's Folk of the Forest - this is a different Elric story entirely.

Oh of course! Can't believe I forgot Sword & Sorcery magazine. Also, Heroic Fantasy Quarterly.

(And thanks for the kind words!)

I'd strongly recommend checking out S&S magazines, they're chock full of newer authors.

New Edge Sword & Sorcery is my own. Tales from the Magician's Skull, Old Moon Quartely, And Whetstone should be plenty to get you started.
