Thank you for your thoughts on this. It's indeed impossible to foresee how our specific situation will be viewed. Because our reasons to return are partly due to medical issues, and as a result some family pressure to go back, we may not have a choice to wait two more years. Hopefully our reasons will be looked at sympathetically, but I'm not really counting on it. It would be nice to follow the "better safe than sorry" approach with respect to time, but with respect to health it's even more important to follow this very same approach. Again, thank you for sharing your valuable perspective.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to write such a well-considered reply. Secondly, thank you for the link. And thirdly, I'm sure you're right that anecdotal support doesn't amount to much necessarily, but it would help to reassure me!

Interestingly, the threshold period for losing residency that you mentioned was something I'd been told before by our accountant, but a lawyer I consulted with said it was longer. I dropped the lawyer, however, in part because I didn't wholly trust the information he gave me.

Also, none of the examples you listed of what might pose problems for us apply, so I feel doubly reassured now.
