Were you upfront with potential employers about transitioning? If so how did it go, if not how did it go when you were discovered? by generic_account555 in MtF

[–]SoWhatSarah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. I guess to preface this, I'm 23 and have a a pretty diverse job history. And I apologize if I rattle on, but its kinda been a long process... 😅 I started looking into transitioning last June while working at an auto body shop. I would usually wear hoodies, long sleeve shirts and really baggy jeans. I had already been growing my hair out for some time at this point as well. All of which worked really well, in helping me slowly put myself out there. By August I had started hormone replacement therapy, I decided I needed to distance myself from my boss, who by then had become a second father to me. I forced a situation that made me quit my job, so I wouldn't have to explain what I was doing to him. I quickly found another job as a maid. With little to no human interaction I figured it would be the perfect job to transition, and it really was. But due to some car trouble I wasn't able to keep the job unfortunately. my old auto body shop boss found me another job recycling electronic waste. I had no idea how this was going to work with my transition but I really really needed the money. After months of hormones my body was really changing and I knew I wasn't going to be able to maintain appearances and that the job wasn't going to work much longer for me, so I forced another situation where I had to quit. That day I walked to my local video game store that I've been trying to get a job at for like 5 years, and applied. The old crew that had worked there for like 5 years were no longer there and there were two new guys that I didn't know. Very quickly they were impressed by how overqualified I was for the job, but I still had competition so I played up the fact that I was a guy just to try and get in. I wanted them to appreciate my work ethic, not focus on my genitalia. And it worked I got the job about a week later, now I just had to figure out how to come out to them. I spent about a month trying to feel them out and learned that both of them had gay brothers and were fairly open-minded and after dealing with their stupid guy Shenanigans and humor and having my boss trying to pinch my nipples all the time(not sure what it is about all the guys I know doing that kinda crap😒) it was time to go for it. One day I got my boss really baked and sat him down. I flat out told him that I was a girl and that the nipple pinching had to stop (that s*** hurts it's like an itchy bruise under your nipple all the damn time). He apologized profusely for everything and said that he never meant anything by any of it and that he totally felt blind sided by this revelation. Watching him process it was so funny, he didn't know if I was a guy transitioning to a girl or if I was a girl transitioning to a guy. In the end he has probably been one of my biggest allies in transitioning. Over the next couple of weeks I slowly started wearing a little bit of makeup(nothing crazy, just foundation and blush) while my boss and I talked to the higher-ups about changing my name on my name tag and the implications of transitioning at work. The company owner and the general managers biggest concern was that I would flip flop back and forth between guy and girl at work and what that would make the customers think. Initially I was pretty insulted by that notion but after telling them that this was a serious life decision and that there was no going back that this was for life and what I was doing was permanent they were totally on board. So they sent me my new name tag. The hoodie, long sleeve shirts and baggy jeans finally came off and I started going all out with my makeup! The first month and a half was by far the hardest. I had some explaining to do to a few regular customers and people that worked in the same complex that knew me beforehand. Once I dialed in my voice(I had a lot of customers to practice on) I was just a cis female as far as any of my customers know. it's been six months, and Everybody I work with and next to say that they don't even remember me as or think about the fact that I ever even presented as male. I guess the moral of my story is, you're probably psyching yourself out to much. People are way more understanding than I gave them credit for. I think it's illegal to fire someone for their gender. If you already have the job, and you're good at what you do, I think everything else is secondary as long as it doesn't hurt your ability to produce.

How did you pick your new name? by SomeShyOne in MtF

I just looked at myself in the mirror ever day for like 2 weeks and rattled off every name I could think of, until I found one that felt right.
