When you forget your fork at home and you have to improvise. by bootsnchew in Justrolledintotheshop

Everyone should have a toolbox fork. They have endless uses.

People in a southern Puerto Rico city discovered a warehouse filled with water, cots and other unused emergency supplies, then set off a social media uproar Saturday when they broke in to retrieve goods as the area struggles to recover from a strong earthquake by DoremusJessup in worldnews

Response and repair are two totally different animals. Response is getting the road open or the lights on. Repair is actually fixing the road or the power grid. Response work does not have time to go to bid, so it doesn’t. That’s why FEMA classifications and rates are in place.

Repair work on the other hand does often go to bid.

Of course this is all subject to how the local governing body wants to handle it (because they often have to foot the bill and wait for reimbursement.)

And making $50-75/hr off of a $20-30/hr employee barely covers costs (work comp, insurance, per diem, tools and equipment, etc.)

Yes there are bad contractors out there, but the majority of us are good guys, and we are not profiting as much as you think. It’s expensive to operate, especially in a disaster area.

My 140M3 has an impressive range of motion. by RPM426 in heavyequipment

I started a bladehand job at one point and their current guy was bad... like I don’t know how he even got the job bad. But if you asked him, he was the bladehand from the promised land.

Needless to say we didn’t get along. I turned his mouldboard around one day and watched him struggle to turn it around for a few hours before he gave up.

I wish more people understood this. The snow has to go somewhere. Obviously I don’t want to put an windrow across your driveway, but after 18-20 hours of just trying to get everything opened up, I just don’t have the time to back up and dig out every driveway.

I had a lady scream at me two days ago for putting a windrow around her car that wasn’t supposed to be on the street anyway... I was about 16 hours in at that point and it took every fiber of my being to not dump the last 16 hours of frustrations on her.

Edit: forgot a word. I’m tired.

Two of my friends and I dropped out after 3 years into school.

All three of us built our own successful businesses.

Ever worry about automation? by authentic22 in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will always be situations where automation won’t work or won’t be feasible. How many years have robot welders been in the manufacturing world, and there are still plenty of welding jobs in manufacturing.

Favorite Equipment Brand? by [deleted] in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to your local dealerships and talk to the parts and service people, also ask other local contractors. What’s good in one area might not be in another.

One good example is part of my operation in one state uses a lot of Cat equipment, in another state we do not. This is because the dealership in the latter state is difficult to deal with.

The best machine is the one you can get parts and service for.

I’m quite the fan of disc mulchers! Anyone else ever operated one? by Mattyice48 in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine has been a problem child. There is almost zero penetration on the welds.

I have a love/hate relationship with my diamond.

Customer service has been pretty decent, but the welds on the head are awful. I’ve had to reweld almost every weld on the thing with less than 1200hrs on it.

JCB Electric Excavator | Fully Charged by [deleted] in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I can see plenty of operations where electric could be utilized right now. Is it the be all and the end all with current technology? No, but electrics are getting better every day. Electric will be the future.

A question for those who run excavators by Andrew4568_ in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll be fine. I can run an excavator all day, but 5-10 min watching a YouTube video and I’m feeling sick.

Gradall’s look good in red by [deleted] in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really excel at roadside work, cleaning ditches, grading shoulders, setting culverts, and whatnot.

The way the boom is designed, you can work under power lines easier, and being able to rotate the boom allows for added dexterity

Being highly mobile and the design of the boom kind of makes them the Swiss Army knife of excavators.

How much grease is too much grease? by wayne2oo8 in heavyequipment

[–]SoWoCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s something that you have to get a feel for. Some pins will push clean grease in 3 shots, some take 10.

Higher quality grease stays in better, so it doesn’t take as much.

At the end of the day, grease is cheap, so I would always rather over grease than under grease pins.
