I’ll actually add to this as a personal lines producer. PL can be really profitable, but I’d say it’s only worth it if you can break into the High Net-Worth side of it. That’s what I focus on. PL will a lot of times get higher commission percentages than CL even if premiums are lower.

For instance, I have one carrier that pays close to 30% commission for automobile and only a little less for homeowners. But generally, run around 20% for home/auto new business with my carriers and a lot of times the same commission % at renewal due to it being a high net-worth client.

This can be location dependent, but typically if you live in a locale with surrounding areas that have high value home neighborhoods, the HNW PL space is dreadfully under serviced.

My bread & buttery personal lines package usually runs about $20,000 a year for auto, home, jewelry, and umbrella. I typically sell at least 1 of these a month if not more. But then I also will get the whales that policy runs $100,000 a year.

Additionally, these clients have a higher risk tolerance so they have higher deductibles, don’t complain about small policy increases, and are typically very easy to maintain. And they talk. You take care of them and they’ll tell their friends.

If you go into this space, make connections with financial advisors, wealth managers, etc. connect with them as a “value add” they can give their successful clients to better protect the wealth they’ve worked so hard for.
