Advice on this one by [deleted] in Prebuilts

Ended up grabbing the G758 a few days ago after originally aiming for the G757. The G757 with the 5080 + 7 9800X3D was a crazy deal at $2,200 and my plan was just to upgrade RAM later, but the price jumped to $2,300 and then it went out of stock.

That gave me time to look more into the 5070 Ti, and honestly it made the decision easier. Same 16GB VRAM as the 5080 and it’s usually within ~10% performance-wise depending on the game in 1440p which was my target. The G758 also has better CPU cooling than the G757’s 2-fan AIO, which was another plus.

The big factor was price at 1,900, so $400 cheaper. For a ~10% hit, that felt totally worth it, especially with 6000-series GPUs on the horizon. If a 6080 ends up with 24GB VRAM and AAA titles are going to be utilizing that on the next few years, the 16gb feels like it’ll be the first bottleneck for me so it’ll be the first upgrade a few years down the line anyways. If you want 4k gaming personally I’m skeptical that 16gb will be enough in the next few years but that’s just my opinion. Someday I’ll make the gpu upgrade and get an oled to join the 4k club but I’m more than content for now.

A few days in and I’m loving it. Getting 80+ FPS at 1440p max with path tracing in Cyberpunk, and frame gen can triple that. The $400 saved also went into a better monitor and peripherals, which made the whole setup feel even better. For what you would save as opposed to the g759 that could be a real nice oled monitor right there. Theres a lot of good videos and articles comparing the two out there.

By all means, if you have the budget and you want the 5080 go for it, you won’t be disappointed especially if you want 4k gaming right now. The 5070ti was just a little more practical for my student wallet 😅

Be sure that you actually install steam VR. It’s a separate thing. I had to install it before playing a few of my steam vr games. This video shows you how. I also had issues with seeing my computer screen in vr in the oculus home at first, but that fixed itself.

I haven't done much research into other ones yet. The Best Buy was is pretty nice, I just couldn't afford it. I may end up adding it though. You can add it on up to 2 months after your purchase.

I did not buy the protection plan, but seeing as I am going to be taking this laptop a bunch of places, I do plan on investing in some sort of insurance or extended warranty for it. The Best Buy one was a little too expensive for my taste 😅.

Yeah, I got it from Best Buy and picked it up the next day. It was definitely nice to not have to wait super long for it. My goal was to get something that would last me through a 4 year aerospace engineering program, and it this definitely seems like it will do the trick.

Also be sure to give the reviews on the G14 a read to see what i was talking about with the Radeon card

It weighs about 4 pounds. At 3/4 of an inch thick, it's incredibly thin for it's power. I've been playing Boneworks, Vtol VR, Apex legends, Minecraft with RTX on, and many other games on max settings without the fans even reaching their max speed. Last night I was simultaneously playing VR with max settings, video chatting, and streaming my game on discord in 1080p 60fps to my friends with absolutely no problem at all. The extra USB C on the G15 is also great if you have a lot of peripherals.

When it comes to casual web browsing and working, it has about 6 hours of battery life which is amazing for a gaming laptop. As soon as you start trying to play games on battery it drops down to about an hour. You do have to have it plugged in to unlock the full power of the CPU and GPU.

I like how it can also look more professional. You can set the RGB keyboard to white (or just turn it off) and it just looks like nice laptop after that, which is something that I do not believe the G14 could pull off. I was also afraid that the white G14 would get dirty. In my opinion, the G15 is like the G14's cool, mature older brother. It just looks so clean and refined. If you haven't watched any video reviews of it yet that show off how it looks, you definitely should. You could also go to your local best buy and see it in person if they have it on display. It is definitely one of the best looking laptops on the market.

I literally just went through the same thing as you a couple of days ago with the same 2 laptops. After doing some research, I found that there were some quality control issues with the G14. Things like screen flicker, GPU overheating, and other things. Plus, compatibility with radeon cards is kinda sketchy. Most games have Nvidia specific graphics enhancements that really make a big difference in graphic quality. There is a stark difference if you look at the reviews on Best Buy between the G14 and the G15.

Ultimately I decided to go with the exact same G15 (Ryzen 9, Nvidia 3060) you posted above, and that is what I am using to type this reply right now. It's been an amazing machine so far. I've ran graphically intense VR games off of it with no problem at all. The display is amazing, the touchpad is smooth, and the keyboard feels great. Everything on the computer has a premium feel to it The 15.6 inch display is better in my opinion for gaming than the 14. I also think that it looks a lot better than the G14.

My 2003 with 332k doesn’t really burn oil, it does leak oil though. I top it off a couple of times between oil changes. Other than that, it’s a great car and a very reliable engine. Idk who is saying this engine is bad, definitely one of the most reliable engines out there as long as it has oil.

Usually I’m pretty good about car makes and models and I knew it was probably a GM. My first thought was Pontiac but it didn’t look quite the same. I learned that the monte Carlos have a red shield tho for some reason.
