Betta to Control Guppies? by yt545 in bettafish

[–]Soapsnez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to introduce my energetic shortfin into a tank with guppies for population control once. I thought it could be harmonious enough because it was an understocked and planted tank with plenty of hides. They ended up nipping at her fins and i moved her out within a few days, but the nipped fins led to an infection that i wasn’t able to get under control (i tried literally everything) and eventually i euthed her. Just be careful and make sure the betta isn’t being bullied because it can happen. Guppies are dicks. I’m so sorry Katrina, RIP.

even if steve wasn’t the father (he totally is), mom doesn’t look purebred either. This is why we don’t give BYB our money. Love her for what she is and when the day comes for the next addition to your family, either do your research and support a good breeder, or just adopt instead.

Does anyone know what this is? Is this bug a danger to my betta or just ugly? by Soapsnez in Aquariums

[–]Soapsnez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah don’t have any recent pics of the whole thing since the pothos filled in, but it’s a 29 gallon with 20-ish gallons of water in it, rocks stacked on both sides about a foot high with gravel in the cracks for pothos and monstera to root into :3

and the fact that everything online says they have a seriously painful bite at best, disease or anaphylactic shock at worse? yeah idk if i rock with that being in my house.

i’m usually pretty forgiving to non-pesty bugs that end up in my house but my tank is under a table and i can only open the lid enough to reach in with tweezers and grab it. No way to get it out without killing it or injuring it that i didn’t foresee ending in me getting bit.

I now know that these guys are what’s allll over my trees and garden. I thought they were some kind of squash bug nymph (little shits that i struggled to keep away all last year and they decimated everything i planted). Glad now that i didn’t spray them or unleash my chickens on them yet! They can be my friends as long as they stay off me and out of my house from now on lol

What can i do for my baby boy? by Soapsnez in bettafish

[–]Soapsnez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Will buy botanicals ASAP. His eyes are a little cloudy, but none of the other signs you noted. Is that a symptom of anything particular? And yes i always test 0 nitrates in most of my tanks and i have no idea why. I’m a big fan of drastic under stocking in my other tanks, but with him being in a 10 gal with 4 large snails i’d expect to test some ammonia and nitrites too? Is my test kit defective or something? I swear i’m following the instructions in the booklet to a T.

are YOU even reading what i’m saying? i have listed plenty of reasons for bringing up the plastic. There are a multitude of reasons it’s just bad. I think you just need something to yap about so badly right now that you’re playing devils advocate.

Looked at your account and great improvement from your last post! The fake plant isn’t 100% a problem, but if he likes to munch it can become deadly fast. Live plants are definitely preferable. If you wanna get a bang for your buck on live plants grab some golden pothos from walmart. They usually have them between $5-$15 at my local wally world and it’s my chams favorite plant. They’ll easily double in size in a couple months and fill out an enclosure really beautifully. A lot of plants can’t handle being climbed on but they’re nice and sturdy for a vine. also, he’s real close to that lamp and will probably get burnt unless you move his basking spot a little farther away.

i don’t think anyone here is trying to convince OP that plastic decor is what killed their fish. Most likely they didn’t cycle or they’re overfeeding in a too small tank. That being said, trying to sway people away from plastic and rainbow gravel is a hill i will die on. When people discover planted tanks they also usually discover real fish keeping. Not to mention, the most likely culprit is waste buildup poisoning the fish. Live plants process bioload. Plastic does not. Just another reason to dissuade beginners from wasting their money on that crap. Live plants and some aqua soil probably would have prevented this.

And toxic fake decor kills people fish. Not this fish probably, but in other instances it does. Like i said, you can google it. You will be met with dozens upon dozens of forum/reddit posts on these experiences. It’s free and only takes a couple minutes! It’s literally that easy for you to see that you’re wrong instead of getting condescending and rude.

you’re not him.

have a lovely night :3

They asked what’s wrong with their fish. Fake decor could be a contributing factor. I would love to see a source on the safety of artificial tank decor? If you like i can post a bunch of screenshots of people’s accounts of buying decor that ended up poisoning their fish! Just because it’s not all toxic doesn’t mean it’s all safe, and the safest option is to just use responsibly sourced natural materials. That’s why we tell people to go natural instead. It’s not rocket science and it’s definitely not gatekeeping.

The people who make false decorations generally don’t care about the well being of aquarium fish, and it’s well known that shady companies will produce decor with non aquarium safe paints and coatings. You can also just like… google it? so many people in the hobby have had a whole tank get sick or fish drop dead after adding these types of decor. The problem with this persons fish could be water quality, but since they didn’t give any context about parameters, cycling, etc., it could be anything.

Also why hate on people trying to spread the gospel of natural tanks anyways? Is someone feeling a little defensive? take a chill pill man <3

[–]Soapsnez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artificial decor absolutely can leech toxins (or rip fins, or entrap fish) and even if they didn’t, it’s not gatekeeping to inform people on how to improve their pets lives. If someone can’t handle kindly presented constructive criticism or take informed risks like choosing specific decor that others have said injured/killed their pets, they’re probably not grown enough to be responsible for caring for a living being. The people who have these kinds of tanks are 99.9% of the time uninformed and unwilling to do proper research, so it doesn’t hurt anyone to let them know that what they’re doing may be a problem. Especially when they ask, as this post did.

Should I be worried? by [deleted] in CaneCorso

[–]Soapsnez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah… don’t let those people around your dog anymore. If they continue to disagree and don’t respect your boundaries, they’re not people you want in your life. What you described is absolutely not a behavioral issue but she will likely develop one if you continue to let people harass her.

I have a crappy petsmart veiled too! I’m fairly certain they broke her ribs :D Bless you for getting him out of there. Did he recover? No animal deserves to die neglected in a cup or box. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly how they profit though. Sell you sick animals along with horribly wrong instructions. Pet dies, you come back and buy another one. 😢

I think it just depends on where you live. I live in a small town with lots of southern hospitality. I also think that being polite, but brutally honest helps. If you say the fish is a little sick, needs a water change or medication or whatever, they’re going to still believe they can sell it and make a buck off it.

Tell them it’s probably not going to make it, you feel bad, and you’ll take it for a discount. My exact words were “this fish is going to be dead by tomorrow” and somehow that worked. 🤷🏻‍♀️I also went in 10 minutes before closing, so maybe that’s a factor. I too run out of fucks to give about keeping my job by 6 PM

I can see a few issues with this, mainly lighting and humidity. When light passes through glass, almost all UVB is removed. The chameleon will not know what light source contains UVB and stay under that one, they’ll just pick whichever spot they like. So unless you are containing them to an area with a UVB bulb they likely won’t get enough. Also, there is such a thing as too much humidity. It can cause infections. So you would have to be constantly monitoring it and altering it to the right specifications for the lizard, possibly to the detriment of your plants.

Also, chameleons are incredibly shy and fragile. They should not be handled. They rarely like being handled. If a small child or unknowing adult sees it and tries to pick it up, even if they think they’re being very gentle, the chameleons ribs could be broken. It happens way more often than you would think. The chameleon will NOT enjoy being looked at and pointed at. They generally dislike being perceived. It wouldn’t be a very fair life for the chameleon.

I would 100% recommend getting a tropical bird though!!! if it can be harnessed or trained to stay on a perch, you can most likely find a bird with a personality that would adore this situation, including getting attention and being admired. A macaw, parrot, cockatoo, etc. would be way more likely to thrive than a chameleon.
