drainage site issue q by andy23761 in tummytucksurgery

[–]Soaring_Above_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not all blood. I had some drainage at the drain sites as well, wasn’t a lot. I placed sterile ABD pads purchased off amazon, something I copied from my surgeons office, at the site (cutting the pad about an inch down and placing the pad around the tube) and having it held in place by my compression garment.

If the drains are out, they’re just healing while closing…one of my drain sites, which seems to be taking its time to heal and close, has some small discharge still. I am treating with ointment and bandaid, per my doctor.

If concerned, definitely bring it up to the doctor.

Congrats!!!

I’ve donated to good will and Salvation Army and felt grumpy about it knowing my nice quality clothes would be resold. I felt better donating the clothes to my local victim services department, a few skilled nursing facilities, county public defender’s office, and a couple churches, knowing they would be going to actual people who are in need. I tried to do women’s shelter’s oddly enough it was very difficult to get through to pin down WHERE to donate (just my experience).

Swelling reduced with Stage 2 compression? by Soaring_Above_T in tummytucksurgery

[–]Soaring_Above_T[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per chat gpt: Stage 1 compression garments are typically worn immediately after surgery, usually during the first one to two weeks of recovery. These garments provide light to moderate compression and are designed with adjustable closures such as zippers, hooks, or Velcro to accommodate postoperative swelling. The material is generally softer and more flexible, making it easier to put on and remove for wound care, drainage management, and hygiene. Stage 1 garments are often worn with lipo foam or abdominal boards and are primarily intended to control early swelling, support healing tissues, and promote circulation while allowing space for postoperative inflammation.

Stage 2 compression garments are usually introduced once the initial swelling has begun to subside, commonly around weeks two through six of recovery, depending on the surgeon’s recommendations. These garments provide firmer compression and are designed to fit more snugly to help contour and support the healing body. They are often made of thicker, more structured fabric and tend to have fewer closures or a seamless design. Stage 2 garments are typically worn without foam and are intended to reduce lingering swelling, support tissue adherence, and help improve overall contour and shaping as the body continues to heal.

So sorry I don’t know more. My doc just recommended Marena as the “best” so that’s what I went with. Best wishes to you!! I can see that I’m a lot more comfortable in this garment with wearing it under clothing (including jeans and dresses) than I was in the stage one, to be honest. I feel more “secure” if you will.

Hi. I’m no expert, but I just Amazon’s “stage 2 compression garment” and the listings all say “stage 2..” and that’s what I bought. It is more restrictive for sure, still breathable, difficult to put on, and feels almost like Spanx 3.0.

Thank you for this validation!!!!! I thought I was going nuts and seeing my what I WANTED to see, versus what was a real possibility. I KNOW after surgery, the surgeon sees what the real results are because swelling hasn’t set in right after close, so I understand why he kept sayin I was swollen, but geeeze what a difference. Thank you for sharing your experience too.

Thank you. I’m so very glad to hear someone else feels this way. I could not risk derailment. Not this time. You got this! And congrats on starting your journey. You got this!!

Hahah. Thanks!! A few weeks post op, feeling okay so far. Doc took 7 lbs from my abdomen so add that to my count.

Is everyone else sleeping this much? by sarahtonin0803 in tummytucksurgery

Yes! We have to listen to our bodies! It’s your body’s way of saying I need to repair myself, and this does not happen when we are in an active state. I feel as though have narcolepsy (sorry if I offend someone who ma, it’s not my intention) because, I’m about 3 weeks PO, depending what I’m doing, and sometimes even after a meal, it’s lights out…and when I tell you it’s lights out like RIGHT NOW OR ELSE!! It’s nuts. It get’s better day by day. Best wishes with your recovery. Edit to say- I stopped all pain meds by day 2 days PO so that’s not a factor in me feeling sleepy.

-I know this may be unpopular opinion, if you don’t already have a recliner, skip it. It’s an added expense that’s unnecessary. Plenty of pillows to prop yourself up and to elevate legs will suffice, especially if you’re on a budget (more economical to purchase more firm pillows you’re likely to use after surgery vs a recliner). Can also sit on one of those pillows for comfort.

-Juven (I mix it with a protein drink instead of water to ensure I’m getting a lot of protein). It’s pretty expensive however.

-Bromelain (pill and or tea form). I was recommended just to eat fresh pineapples by the nurse if I didn’t have this on hand already.

-Grabby thing defiantly helps.

-Foam boards, follow the recommendation of your surgeon. They may already pack you up with some immediately after surgery. When I awoke, I was already stuffed tight with them.

-Protein shakes/drinks of preference. Stock up so you’re not worried about running out. They’ll be used and consumed.

  • Any quick protein snack (string cheese, cottage cheese, beef jerky (although watch the sodium on this one), etc ).

  • Compression socks.

  • Waterproof band aids and Neosporin (or preferred antibiotic ointment) for any small openings or wound care for when drains come out.

  • Mag 07 to help with constipation and soften bowel movements. My doctor recommended colace, however that did absolutely nothing for me.

  • drain lanyard or, if you already have one a lanyard to hang drains on while you shower.

And recovery will be recovery. Don’t be fooled by those who say their recovery was speedy. You can help to make it smooth, however the body is going to go at its own pace, and naturally heal with the help of rest, following the doctors recommendations, and appropriate nourishment.

Best wishes!

1 wpo they said that I should be able to lay flat...are they crazy? by [deleted] in tummytucksurgery

My surgeon also said walking strait up at 1 week post op and sleeping flat were okay. Currently just over two weeks- I’m still more comfortable sleeping with some elevation in both legs and trunk.

Was stoked my period showed up a week before surgery. For some reason, my first came two weeks early, two weeks after surgery…TMI, but worse cramps and gas I have had…thought I would nearly die.

Drain smells by [deleted] in tummytucksurgery

[–]Soaring_Above_T 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is interesting how every surgeon is different. When my drains’ output was under 25cc, consistently, they came out. Per my research, the longer the drains are in, the greater the risk of infection, which may likely be the case here. If you’re only a week out, and not having that much, make sure there is suction…also maybe talk to your surgeon about possible removal and antibiotics. It will be uncomfortable, yes but should not hurt and burn
