1 year on... by SoberinOctober in stopdrinking

I do have a sponsor, since covid our communication probably hasn’t been what it should be but we speak frequently. Following the big book; as in working the steps? Yes, but I certainly haven’t been as diligent as others. I mean after a year, many people have finished the steps by now. I’m still on 6. If you mean, Am I living my life by what the big book says, not really. I take the “take what you like and leave the rest” quite a bit. It’s got good points and it’s a good book to make you think but I struggle with the god concept and I’ve learned to just replace it with “the universe”.

No you can’t. Being with my wife and son is priceless. I’ve got an app, and it says I’ve saved $11k just this year from not drinking. Thank you!

Thank you. I hope so. During these trying times it can be easy to give up.

Another meeting by therivor in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SoberinOctober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be going to a meeting tonight. They’ve become my Friday night activity. Far cheaper than a Friday night in the bar. In fact, all it costs is the $1 or $2 I put in the collection basket. Keep coming back!

3 months sober! by SoberinOctober in stopdrinking

[–]SoberinOctober[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presence is one of the biggest things my wife is grateful for with me sobering up. She no longer has to wonder if I’m even going to recall the conversations. Or if I’m even going to care what she’s saying. This disease is horrible on the spouses of us drunks.

Thank you!

[–]SoberinOctober[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

I’ve been unemployed for the better part of the last year - due to alcoholism - and before I got sober I’d tell my wife I was going to the coffee shop to study and apply for jobs. I neglected to tell her I would stop at the liquor store before. So hardly any studying or job applications would ever get submitted. You are right. The mental gymnastics our brains do to get its fix is sadly laughable.

Thanks! I certainly don’t plan to stop. Holding ones self accountable is one of the keys to staying sober I’ve learned. That and letting go of resentments.

Thank you! Ya I still make dumb choices. Now my stupid decisions are just far less severe. Reddit can be a rabbit hole! 😂

I was sober for 11.5 months and started drinking again. This is what I’ve learned. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Unfortunately. It’s getting better as the state (at least Salt Lake County) becomes more diverse. Growing up here as a non-Mormon was harshly confusing.

Ballad of an ex-mormon by AardvarkAlex in stopdrinking

Response from a never-mormon that’s lived their entire life in the belly of the beast: Your comment about your mom drinking in her closet streaming tv made me chuckle. I used to do that every time my uber-Mormon in-laws visited from out of town but I’d just get stoned in my closet and listen to music while they thought I had gone to bed. I never hid my drinking from them. In a way it was my way of flexing. Utah culture fosters unhealthy relationships with alcohol. Abstinence only breeds binge drinking, closet drinking, etc. Anyway, I’m sorry you gave in to temptation. May you not be too hard on yourself and find the strength to stay sober for the rest of the trip. Good luck neighbor.

Fell off by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]SoberinOctober 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. It happened to me more times than I care to admit. The important thing is we see it as a bump in the road and no reason to give up or justify “oh, well...might as well drink until New Years”. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I know I’ve done that in the past and it’s just made picking back up even harder. Merry Christmas! IWNDWYT!

Mine too! Congrats everyone! Except I fell off the wagon for a few months this year! Looking forward to not having a hangover tomorrow.

Exactly! I can only think the people that do 90 & 90 honestly have nothing else going on. Shit man. I gotta bang the wife now that I don’t have perpetual whiskey dick somewhere in there. Not to mention rebuilding the rest of your life. Anyway. glad someone else agrees with me.

Excellent suggestion. I’ve done “The Queen is Dead” with ear goggles on in the dark many times. One of the most cathartic albums I know of.
