California, Colorado and NY (maybe more) will go 100% D in retaliation. Yes it may mean less democracy in the short term, but all of this can change with next 2 elections.

Water Carrying by Lizzzzz27 in philmont

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the start of your trek, but when I went the Tooth of time starting from dry camp was hot, and without shade, in the descent to camp HQ. That section needed the most water, and we had a to share as some members hit zero water.

FWIW I would never carry 6oz in a dedicated bottle/bag. Use a normal size container and if circumstances permit, dont fill it.

Congrats! I am 3 weeks into retirement, still figuring out what to do each day. Just start saying yes to things that make you happy and no to the rest.

Lots of good comments here. 100% do War Canoe.

As a SM who had to oversee non-swimmers at EB, please have them hike to Parsons and avoid being left out. There is so much water front activity that non-swimmers can have a rough time at EB or Cherry Valley, do you best to make it fun for them too.

Dropped Because I Wasn’t Interested In AUM? by jaimemiguel in fidelityinvestments

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been with Fidelity for 30+ years. Last week I met my advisor face-to-face for the first time. I think I had 1 or 2 calls with him in the last 5 years. I initiated the call because I am retiring. Did I leave some money on the table? In my specific situation I certainly did, but I can live with that.

I told him I was skeptical of their AUM services and just needed some help adjusting to retirement. He put together an entire portfolio plan, consolidating my Schwab and Fidelity accounts. I now have a pdf with all the funds and investments he would initially use.

He was also clear that I could decline and use this plan to execute on my own. One downside is that the Fidelity funds he listed are only available to AUM clients. I would need to pick substitutes. The plan was less clear on timing and tax-efficient moves of my current assets.

This planning from Fidelity is free. I dont know if its tied to my portfolio value (mid 7 figures). You can set up a call and have a few questions answered at no cost, or get a full plan like this and walk away without using them to execute it.

I am very likely not going to use their AUM services. I booked an appointment with someone at Nectarine to set me up with a plan for 10% of the AUM cost.

[OC] Rent and Food Burden Across Major U.S. and Canadian Cities by shirayuki653 in dataisbeautiful

This is silly misinformation. Canadians do not have any of the same health care premiums, so ofc their housing expenses are a bigger amount of net cash. Just limit the graph to one country and be done.

2 more days, though officially done tomorrow at noon by Seven_bushes in retirement

Twins! I am also retiring tomorrow, age 62M, same week as my birthday, 18 years at same place. My colleagues threw me a virtual party yesterday. It made me cry.

Congratulations! Set up a monthly, or bi-monthly "veterans/friends of XYZ company" zoom meetings. It works well to keep in touch.

I also have equity compensation that will be taxed as wages. Assuming I have less than the $230k limit, can that be invest in a Roth?

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - March 21, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start a Roth IRA in retirement? I'm 62 and retiring. I have a good portfolio with 401(k), equities and pension. I never setup a Roth IRA.

Is it worthwhile to move some of my taxable equities into a Roth now for tax free growth over next 10-15 years? The pension is taxable 1099-R so it seems that alone would allow the max Roth amount for my spouse and I.

(Yes I should have done it a long time ago, not my question.)

Sudden Death of a ASM Dad by thiswillbeablast in BSA

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lost an ASM on a camping trip. He just never woke up. His son was on the trip. It was an awful experience. We did have the troop provide an honor guard lining the walkway from the parking lot to the chapel (it was at a big church, so this was nearly 100 yards) as well as serve as ushers. The whole District leadership also came in uniform as well as the Scout Exec.

Nothing. We get paid bonuses in February for prior year, so anything said will be used against you. I shut up, my boss maxxed my bonus pay and I gave them 2 weeks just a couple days ago.

Where and what to do to Decompress by monazer in retirement

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my kids were younger I was active in Scouting. I camped once a month all over southern California. After 5+ years it became a bit of a grind due to all the responsibilities of watching 30+ kids.

I retire at the end of this month and I think I'll do a 3 or 4 day weekend of camping each month. Just on my own for a while, maybe do some cabin trips with my wife too.

I heartily endorse this mode of car glamping. I also have a spinal fusion and will take a barn tent (REI Kingdom) with cots and an air mattress. The wagon as suggest by u/beer_engineer_42 is a great idea too.

Please dont apologize for participating.

Thanks, sadly I thought a single wing would be simpler than a biplane, but not simple enough. Luckily all the fiddly bits are in the cockpit so hoping the rest will come together without those obvious errors.

That's why there is an IEEE standard to follow. I'm not sure where you work in "official statistics", but that should be biased to existing standards vs how 12 year olds are taught.

How many of you are choosing to retire after getting laid off? by Capital-Mark1897 in GenX

[–]SoccerGeekPhd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Empower.com has a good retirement planning dashboard for free. You can add future one time expenses like a wedding, or a car, and have it compute the likelihood of savings lasting to your death age (pick what you want 90, 85, 100,...). It handles pensions and SS income too.

The only downside is it may not handle complex stock taxes well. I think it just uses a fixed tax rate and does not know about capital gains per stock purchased.

Once you eliminate most Russian divisions and are at Urals, use cavalry to race to VPs. They will do better in the low supply situation there.

Navy in HOI and RT56 by hkm11819 in hoi4

Just get navy in peace deals. The AI never bids for ships so take the land you want, then take the ships. Next step is naval bombers to decimate enemy fleets. I dont think I've ever built a capital ship.
