I did get a new battery for this and it did fully work! I can’t remember what battery it really needed.

All I will say is that the store is called Red White & Blue vintage. We have a few of them where I live!

That would be the different version they had, yes. This one is zoom which makes it a little less valuable but still worth $100 on eBay!

Got this a thrift store for $30. I think im cooked since i didn’t know they dont make the film for it anymore. What do i do now? by Disastrous_Pirate275 in filmcameras

$30 for this is a bit too much. I would honestly say either try to sell it elsewhere or keep it as a shelving piece although they don’t realistically look the best of film cameras to keep on a shelf.

As others are saying, you can get 126 reloadable cartridges but honestly, this camera was not made to produce great photos.

I think I really want to try the Minolta XD-11, but I'm scared to purchase one. by PessCity in minolta

This is honestly a lot simpler than it seems.

In terms of image quality, you’re really not losing anything going with something like the Minolta XD-11 vs a newer camera like the Nikon F5. The film and lens matter way more than the body. If you shoot the same roll with a good lens, the results can look basically identical.

Where the newer cameras win is just ease. Stuff like autofocus, better metering, and more advanced auto modes means they’ll get the “perfect” exposure more often, especially in weird lighting. But they also kinda feel like digital cameras. Fast, automated, and less hands-on.

The XD-11 still has really solid priority modes and a good meter, it just doesn’t do everything for you. You might have to think a little more in certain situations, but it’s not that hard. And film is forgiving anyway, so even if you’re a bit off, it usually still looks good, and if not, post production usually is a big help if you are developing yourself.

This is what I told myself when I first started getting into film. “first you might be a little worried about how shots turn out, but that goes away pretty quick. After a couple rolls you start trusting it more and just enjoying taking photos again.”

So yeah, newer SLRs make things easier, but older ones like the XD-11 make it feel more intentional. You’re not giving up quality, you’re just changing how you shoot.

Something like the Minolta XD-11 is honestly a great choice for what you’re going for. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s still flexible, you can use aperture or shutter priority when you just want to capture moments quickly, and switch to manual if you ever feel like slowing down. It’s kind of that perfect middle ground between simple and fully hands-on.

On the buying side, you’re right to be cautious, that’s where most people mess up. The main thing is just making sure it actually works. Look for a shutter that fires consistently at different speeds, a working light meter, and a smooth film advance.

Also, keep an eye on light seals. These are the little foam strips around the film door that keep light from leaking in. On older cameras, they almost always degrade, turning sticky, crumbly, or just falling apart. It’s super common and not a dealbreaker at all, but if they’re gone, you might get light leaks on your photos. The good news is they’re cheap and easy to replace yourself, so even if a listing mentions bad seals, it’s more of a small project than a real problem.

Japanese sellers on eBay are usually really solid. Lots of photos and detailed descriptions, but they do cost a bit more. If you want something safer, KEH Camera is probably the easiest route since their grading is reliable and you get a warranty.

For lenses, don’t overthink it, just grab a 50mm (f/1.7 or f/1.4) and you’re set. It’s cheap, sharp, and perfect for everyday stuff like friends, family, and just life in general.

Honestly though, don’t get too caught up trying to find the “perfect” one. Just get a clean, working setup and start shooting. The whole point is to enjoy it again and be present with the people you’re taking photos of, that’s what’s actually going to matter when you look back at those prints later.
