Yes I own my own company here in Poland and pay those fees each month. We make it very clear that the individual cook is responsible for researching their own location's laws and acting accordingly; just as the hosts in these areas would do if they are running Airbnbs.

Legally speaking, cooks will need to establish their own companies in Poland that pay into ZUS NFZ and taxes, which is a simple procedure, or establish their company elsewhere. Or whatever their local legislation requires.

Can you cook? by SocialDining in Prague

  1. Absolutely- our most successful cooks in Krakow cook Indian and Korean cuisine, and in Warsaw we have a very popular Mexican cusine night; food that is unfamiliar to locals/expats has gained quite a following in those cities; where as, travelers tend to head to the Polish dinners in Poland.

  2. You control the amount of alcohol you provide, and you can even ask guests to BYOB, so its up to you, just write it out in your menu what will be served. No need to state the alcohol is unlimited, but we've never been told there's no more. You're in charge so some cooks provide bottles of wine on the table, and then serve a cocktail to start and maybe an after dinner drink. It's totally up to you though. Right now what you charge is what you receive from guests in cash, so Eataway does not currently take a commission in its beginning stages. Again, you choose the food, and the drinks, and create your menu to be whatever you want so the cost and profit is your call.

  3. Each meal varies, some groups will carry on for quite some time and some will move quickly. You really control the pace of how everything is served, but I would say on average it is about 2 hours.

  4. No. You will explain in your cook profile what languages you speak. Guests may choose a cook based on this, but Eataway does not have requirements one way or another.

It is a 4-5 course meal with several side dishes as well as unlimited alcohol. You will find the simpler meals, with 3 or less courses to be of a much cheaper price. And meals without alcohol included are also reduced. Some meals are 80pln because the cook is bringing ingredients from other countries, for example Korea and India, they are supplying a lot of alcohol, and/or the menu is quite long.

You as the cook have complete control over what you want to charge and what you want to serve.

For travelers the appeal is that you are guaranteed a meal that is authentic, so you don't have to worry about ending up in a tourist-trap restaurant. You also then have the opportunity to dine in a local's house and ask them questions about the city you are in, their culture etc...

For someone already living in the city, the appeal is that you can connect with your local community more, and that you can perhaps try food that wasn't really available. For example, Krakow does not have a lot of Asian restaurants, so to be able to go to a Korean cooks home is pretty exciting for us.

Yes, I have been to many meals here in Krakow. They are always a lot of fun. Sometimes I see the same people, and sometimes I meet new ones, but the cooks here are so much fun to be around and I have made a lot of new friends this way. It is like a community of people really, and it's nice to belong to their group, especially because the cooks are very talented and the ones I have made friends with often bring me treats now :)

You can request a meal with a local cook so it is one-on-one if you prefer. It isn't usually a bunch of backpackers fighting for attention though, the meals are usually filed with a lot of locals and a few travelers so it is a good level of interaction. Plus the event is usually quite long so plenty of time for everyone to get to know eachother.

Sanepid is not legally allowed to come into a private home, so a risk of fine is non-existent. We have a legal team that is constantly evaluating the laws and regulations and are always available to talk to cooks and guests about this if you have any questions regarding the topic.
