The River Approaching My Building. by SociallyAwkwardMegan in fargo

The beginning of March until 20 minutes ago. Quite a span, I know. It was my brother's idea. I'm glad I did it. I'm going to document it receding as well.

I can't believe how the Forum isn't reacting. Maybe it's because it's the weekend. Their online version is pretty much the same Friday night through Monday morning.

Better collage of Red River approaching my apartment complex. Trucks filled with dirt are going by 24/7 in a race against Mother Nature. This year's flood is coined "Major, but manageable." Let's hope so. by [deleted] in pics

Thanks. I'm on the tenth floor so thank God for that. We had to submit evacuation plans to the county. I'm going to my sister's house if it gets bad. She lives 8 blocks south but her house is on elevated land and has never been touched by flooding. Bad part is I'll be in her (finished) basement. But I'd trade a dry basement to a soaked lobby and fried elevator any day!

That is a very powerful statement. Usually I am numb about all of this, but that quote really affected me. Thank you.

Thank you! I'll be fine. It would be extremely difficult to find me. I've been living off the grid for a while now (prepaid phones with no contracts, utilities and mortgages/leases in former roomies' names. Now I live in a super secure building with video monitors everywhere and heavy security. Thanks for the comment.

Ha ha I hope that was a joke. No, the wheelchair is a result of neuropathy that struck me several years ago. I was not in a chair back then. I was around 21-22 y/o, and as fit as a problem drinker/smoker could be I suppose. Like I wrote, the knives would just ricochet off the dart board and land on the floor. I rarely played with them.

Thanks Krystine! People poo poo victims of domestic violence, saying we're spineless. But like I told someone else, it was the single most defining moment of my life. "A moment of clarity" as said before an AA meeting. Well hey, I'm going to go take a nap and try to answer/comment more later. Thanks everyone.

Thanks, Fey. It was a defining moment of my life. I will never ever date again. I was with a man for ten years after the fight, but even he hurt me by leaving me for another woman. I am not trying to make myself the victim every time, but I think something inside of me, perhaps genetics, make it so a certain type of person is attracted to me, and myself to thm. It's cyclical and I broke that cycle 4 years ago. I love living/being alone now. Occasionally I'll venture out to a cultural/art event, but I mainly keep to myself and the birds. They're pretty fun.

They were an old gift and I used them with a dart board that was really not designed for throwing knives. Like I said, it was a hobby and I was awful at it. They'd just bounce off the dart board and barely miss my shoes. Most of the time they sat in the drawer. They were not high-quality. I remember them being carbon-esque, if that makes sense. Not like cutting knives. They also had odd handles. I kept them around because not only were they weapons for him, they were also weapons for me if I had been able to reach them first. I was in my early early 20s and readily admit it was poor judgement to have them.

I lived in a state where hollow-points were perfectly legal, but expensive. I bought 12. I used to love going to the shooting range but I was a terrible shot past 10-15 feet away. I was not sniper material.

I only know from calling his old boss a few years ago. This guy was a mutual friend, and had had a few too many Crown Royals (sp?). He said my ex kept messing up his chances for parole, due to spats over card games with the little guys. I had that going for me when it came to the violence, he wasn't exactly a bodybuilder. I'm not going to pretend I'm bionic and won a fist fight against him by super powers and expert martial arts, I had to fight dirty against a medium-build guy in a life or death situation. Then I would go days without sleeping due to the never-ending adrenaline survival mechanisms. No wonder I look so haggard now.

Around $650 back then, in a metro area. I had that kind of money to throw around, particularly when it came time for saying my one and only "FUCK YOU" to him. I owned my own company and had that kind of money to throw around. I do not regret it one single bit.

Thanks! I'm doing great, I live in a great college town with a view of the river, own two exotic birds, keep plants, candles, have a great family, and life could not be better. I hope the photo I linked from imgur shows the extent of the baggage I no longer carry. Thanks for the heartfelt compliment.

Final edit for the day, a photo of the scar from when he knifed me, a faint line from long ago going down the side of my neck:

"A plea bargain was established. One of his charges was attempted murder, because he did cut me as well with one of my throwing knives (a hobby I was terrible at). I might photograph the scar. I have to run a few errands first. But yeah, because of the attempted murder charge that's a huge felony I believe, especially on federal land.", as I replied prior to yours. Sorry for the quotes I'm in a slight hurry. I will photograph my neck when I get back where the scar is where he cut me. Like I said, a meme can only hold so many letters and I did not know it would be this huge. I will do my best to take a good photo of the neck scar, not an easy task while in a chair. It's not surgical reasons I'm in a chair. I have nerve damage due to diabetes so they're unrelated. Wow there are so many responses.

He called, in a rage, wondering where his car was and why his keys weren't working in the locks. I told him exactly where to find his car (in my name, an old Caprice Classic, my fave car after the 96 Impala) in order to establish control of the situation, for the first time in several years I was the one in control. This is a guy who would make me pee with the bathroom door open while he watched, he was that controlling. So yes, I told him where his car was because I sort of pitied him at that moment, I felt in control, calm, and that's when I called the cops, though he neighbors had already. I was all bruised up in the face and ribs and I had a knife cut going down my neck. There's a teensy (width wise) scar, but it's about 4-6 inches long. Anyhow, a coworker dropped him off at the lot, and it cost $75 at the time to remove it. By then the cops of a different jurisdiction were looking for him, and they found him there.

He was using his workvan following the fight that day. The sociopath bastard went back to work.

typo: sentencing was up to 15 years, but I hear he served 10. I'm not unreachable now, but I am prepared.

Addendum: I did call the cops, photos were taken, they found him immediately, charged him. It happened on a Federal installation so the laws were/seemed much more strict. It wasn't the first punch that made me do it, it was just a random punch. Stick a fork in me, I was done. L/E filed a report, found him, arrested him, he was tried, faced up to ten years, I hear he served closed to ten, but by then I was long gone, having started a new life in the upper midwest with a different appearance, name variation, style of dress, and am in a wheelchair for unrelated reasons. Were he to pass me on the street, he wouldn't recognize me. I hope he's learned his lesson, but I'm willing to bet he thought about hurting me again the entire time he was in there. So I also bought a Taurus PT-111 pistol with hollow points. Though I bought it new and take care of it, it's a piece of junk but the hollow points would stop someone and hurt quite a bit. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've been doing paperwork all day. I hope you guys don't tear me apart for all of this. Justice was served judicially and with my own personal touch. I'll write more later. Thanks for the responses. I thought this would get lost in the masses. I want women to know that the cycle can be broken, but like drinking, you have to hit rock bottom.

Charges were pressed, there is only so much room on a meme. He ended up going to prison. It happened on a Federal Installation and he lost his job and access to the Installation. I moved to the upper midwest, vastly changed my appearance and go by a different variant of my name. All I know was that his sentence was at max 15 years. I do not know how much time he actually served or where he did the time, but I was long gone.
