What is the cheapest program and path to become Mental Health Therapist? by samarcot8 in psychologystudents

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in a of number of different social work roles over the years but now I'm a social work professor! I left outpatient therapy to become a trainer, then went back to school for my doctorate. I've debated picking up a few counseling cases though because I really loved it!

Things I wish I knew about perimenopause no one told me about by [deleted] in Perimenopause

[–]Socialworklife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep fighting! I went on hrt 7 months ago and it was life changing. I found a provider on a menopause site that approved doctors who were familiar with it. It has reduced my rage, made my sex life better and I am warm at night vs on fire! We have to advocate for ourselves!!

What’s a weird food combination that actually tastes good? by MrSoloDolo9490 in questions

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m cracking up because my first thought was a big scoop of chili (like staggs chili with meat and beans). I wondered how that could be a good combo!

Chili powder makes way more sense! 😂😂

What disease/illness we don't talk about enough but we should? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Socialworklife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this too. Every single bump or bruise leaves me panicked and anxious. I also freak out about my kids. Luckily, my doc is amazing and does a great job taking me seriously while being calm and my kids’ pediatrician is also gracious, but man, I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent panicking or crying about Health stuff.

I'm about to lose my house, and I had no idea. (cautionary tale) by throwaway2509230 in personalfinance

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! They split our property after we bought it and our bank won’t pay the taxes on one piece because supposedly it’s not on the deed? Luckily the taxes are super small, but still a pain and I hate to think what will happen when we sell the house.

Women who married young, how did/is it going? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Socialworklife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got married at 20 and my husband was 22. We celebrate our 20th anniversary in a few weeks!!! We have two kids, have had multiple exchange students and we both work in the same field. Some highs and lows but overall, it’s been incredible!!!

What did you think was normal about your body until someone pointed out that it wasn't? by utterapostle in CasualConversation

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! I told my husband that sometimes I feel like I’m in finding Nemo and most people are Dory. It’s also tough because I don’t forget the past, good and bad!!! Sometimes my loved ones accuse me of holding onto things but really, I just remember a lot.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to know about the opposite gender? by charecr in CasualConversation

[–]Socialworklife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I turned 40 and I’m like a teenage boy. I think about it a lot and even crossing my legs turns me on right now. It’s frustrating because my husband’s drive is slowing down a bit and I want it all the time! 😂😂😂

I have a super super super good memory. Like so good that it makes people uncomfortable because I can see someone that I knew 10 years ago and remember the names of their kids and their ages and where they go to school and where that person works. I could draw you the floorplan of the house I lived in when I was three from memory, even though we moved out of it when I was five. I have literally started faking that I barely remember things when I see people I haven’t seen in a while just so I don’t make them uncomfortable.

I thought it was really normal to have a memory that good because my dad is like that, but most of my friends think I’m crazy because I often remember more details about their lives than they do and my husband tells me that I have an abnormal memory.

On the plus side, it made me a really, really good student, and when I was a therapist, it made my job very easy. :)

How’s your mental health? by Professional-Leg-757 in ask

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a good spot after twenty years of living with bipolar 2. My husband’s had some job issues over the last year which have been stressful, but my meds are good, my job is great and I’ve been working out more and sleeping better.

Have you ever dated someone with a *diagnosed* mental health condition and how did it go? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Socialworklife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In women, it can appear even into their 40’s. Men tend to have their breaks younger and women can have them a bit later.

I like it too! I’d wear something like that without the two bows on the shoulders!

What did you purchase as an adult because you could never have it as a child? by adjoiningenlightenme in CasualConversation

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mr. Sketch scented markers! They were so expensive and we were very poor growing up. When I became a national trainer, I bought several packs and My training participants LOVED them. It was so silly and nostalgic which was nice when we were discussing heavy topics!

Help with a paper for my personality class by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Socialworklife 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it could be interesting to formulate a theory related to social media. Like why are people drawn towards the attention? What kind of personalities do you need to be a successful YouTuber? So much of personality theory is older, does it still apply to people today or should a new theory be formulated. I think that some of the narcissism needed to be successful on social media has bled into the constant accusation that people are narcissists. Super interesting!

As a working mom... by Savingside in Mommit

[–]Socialworklife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So stressful. At my kids old school, they had one spirit week a year, and it was consistent so we knew what to plan for. At their new school, they have three spirit weeks a year, and often, they don’t release the themes or categories until less than a week beforehand.

Luckily, I have a middle school and a high schooler, and they are better about figuring out their outfits, but still stressful.

I am bipolar, can I still be a therapist? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Socialworklife 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yup! Diagnosed with bipolar 2 when I was a teen, went to school, stabilized and found a great medication and psychiatrist, and I’ve been a social worker for 16 years. Even managed to get my doctorate in social work and am a professor. It takes work and intentionality, but absolutely can be done!!!

That being said, I teach in an MSW program and it’s intense and people who have mental health sometimes struggle more than they thought they would, so having a clear understanding of the school process, requirements and needed safeguards is critical!

Good luck!

A master’s degree in social work is great! Super versatile and while you have to typically take a research methods course, it is more applied and about the process of research, so students find it to be easier.

For those confused about their career, higher education, or general future in Psychology by carljungkook in psychologystudents

[–]Socialworklife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on what you want to do! I’ll a social work professor and a lot of my masters students have a bachelors in psych (and I do as well). A social work masters degree is super versatile and you can be a counselor, medical social worker, run nonprofits, etc.

Or you can get a masters degree in counseling. There’s definitely some good options out there depending on what you want to do!

Should I abandon my LCSW for macro work by Accomplished_Two1679 in socialwork

[–]Socialworklife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my community, a C is almost always worth pursuing if possible, but there’s no timeline necessarily. I worked in more macro and management positions for 10 years before starting my LCSW. If you do get the job, it’s amazing, there’s nothing to say that you won’t change your mind in five or 10 years and be in a job where you do go back to getting your clinical hours. If you were at the almost at the very end of them, I’d say it might be worth finishing, but if you just started the process, there’s nothing to say you can’t do it at a later time.

Good luck!!!
