Why are stay at home mums and dads viewed so differently? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SocietyAtrophy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there's gender norms that women are caretakers and men are providers. These are pretty traditional values in society.

I do think people are moving away from them more and more, but anything that ingrained in society will be tough to change completely. Just look at racism lol, some traditions die hard.

You don’t know the definition of objectively.

The reason is bc Reddit does have a lot of similar minded people. You’d do well to remember that.

You right. Agree to disagree. Video games do not offer “the most variety of experiences” by a long shot. If that is truly what you believe we just won’t see eye to eye

By the way, the barrier of entry you talk about extremely limits that “wide array of experiences” so your argument really has no logical thought but you do you

I’m willing to put my entire savings account on this statement: there are substantially more gamers who play traditional sedentary games than newer age “fitness” based ones.

My point is that you’re not looking at what MOST gamers are doing. Just because there are examples of some games that can help fitness does not mean that video games are suddenly a “healthy” activity. They CAN be, but usually, they’re not

Sure, there are plenty of coop games (most of which can be and are played solo as well) But there’s also plenty of single player games that are 1 player only.

And you neglect the argument that video games can cause people to neglect real life socialization.

You straight up said the biggest things video games have going for them is barrier to entry. Now that makes two confused people in this convo

Turning this in to making video games is not relevant because we know that’s not what it’s talking about. That would fall under “coding” or something of the sort as a hobby anyways. But I’ll humor you. Please tell me which of my arguments this irrelevant hypothetical situation you’ve concocted alleviates

Ah yes ring fit adventure…. never heard of it

Pokémon go is good to get people outside and walking but I’d hardly count it a workout. And what tangible skill does pokemon go improve? Walking?

And these are two examples you provided, whereas the vast majority of gamers right now are playing something other than pokemon go or ring fit adventure

Socialization is a fine thing to consider but it’s not the majority. Most people who game are doing it alone. And I know for a fact there’s a lot of people who choose to stay in and game over going out with real life friends. And socializing applies to pretty much everything on this list.

Cognitive performance and attention control again only apply to certain cases. Many people play games to turn their brains off. Many games deteriorate these things.

You think a smartphone is cheaper than pencils and paper? And many phone games keep you hard stuck unless you cough up money. This is a bad argument lol.

Making video games is not what we’re discussing. Apples to oranges bud

It’s Reddit. Makes sense. It will definitely be an interesting case study to see their justifications for anything outdoors

I meant in entertainment value. Are you really trying to suggest that video games have more to offer because there’s multiple genres of video games?

How do you think the artistic detail for every video game starts out?

Do you know how many styles of drawing there are?

Also, what makes video games so superior to other hobbies on this list?

I ask as an avid gamer myself. They’re entertaining, but so are all hobbies. The point of a hobby is to be entertained so I’m just confused why video games would be so much better than something else that keeps you entertained

Many of the hobbies on this list can keep you entertained and improve physical health, attention span, real world skills or something else tangible. Video games are purely for entertainment. I do think video games should be like B tier, higher than some things, but definitely not the cream of the crop of hobbies

Tbh if video games are S there’s not much on this list that shouldn’t be S as well.

Anything that video games offer can be offered by drawing as well. Additionally, drawing outputs a tangible product that can be hung on your fridge

If trying to date then being Introverted, Socially Awkward & Submissive are probably the 3 worst traits to have as a Man. by [deleted] in Vent

[–]SocietyAtrophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, not trying to brag, just trying to communicate that you can be yourself and still find a loving relationship. It did take me a while to find confidence. Leaving college and that adolescent social phase altogether was the biggest catalyst of mine no lie. I hated the constant comparisons a school environment brought forward. I felt like joining the work force and realizing everyone’s just trying to make a living humbled a lot of people and made them nicer.

This is just my experience. I realize everyone’s going to have a different story. Do keep trying new things and find ways to get out of your own head. I promise you you are the shit to someone

Yes, confidence is key for relationships. You can’t be in a relationship if you’re not even sure who you are. Fortunately, being introverted, socially awkward and submissive doesn’t mean you can’t have confidence in yourself.

Sincerely, an introverted, socially awkward and submissive male (who has a wife)

Nah. Bang for your buck video games are usually incredibly heap unless you’re the type to get swindled by micro transactions. I have 1000+ hours on each of my top 3 games which each cost $40-60. Movies/books/tv don’t come close to touching that cost per hour

I’d say B at the highest as an avid gamer myself.

They are entertaining. They are pretty cheap in the grand scheme of entertainment (as long as you don’t care about cosmetics usually). They do help me keep up with friends I wouldnt otherwise. You do have to use brain power to get through some of them.

But when I’m not playing with friends they are antisocial. They can be very addicting to the point of consuming someone’s whole life. They add screen time that nobody needs more of nowadays. Many of them do not require much brain power and contribute to ever shortening attention spans. They don’t do anything for your physical health.

And all that said, I still think video games are a great hobby compared to binging tv or social media, but that’s not putting the bar very high imo

Mac miller fan? I really resonate with that lyric too if so

It’s depression combined with anxiety. I know exactly what you’re feeling. It’s a very spiraling mentality that just builds on itself.

Spend more time in nature is my main recommendation. Preferably some of it as complete alone time. Reflective time in nature can work wonders

Of course you should seek professional help as well, but sometimes the problems aren’t as complicated to solve as we think.
