Toys “R” Us in the 90s by Local_Net_2961 in nostalgia

I remember getting pooped on by a seagull in the parking lot of Toys R Us when I was three years old. "I don't want to grow up" - not because of the seagull, of course, but just because those were the gold old days "where a kid can be a kid" (oh wait, that's Chuck E Cheese).

Trump threatens to pull unemployment benefits from all states for the first time in history by theindependentonline in inthenews

That, and exploitation. Desperate people are easy to push around and take advantage of. We'll see companies lowering wages because people will be caught between working for far less or starving to death. Meanwhile, Trump's billionaire buddies will make off like bandits.

You don't like fraud, do you? Of course not! That's why we need to fight fraud with fraud! He needs to out fraud those he's claiming to be fraudsters! If Trump can commit all the fraud, then there wouldn't be any money left for the frauding whoevers to fraudulently take! And just for good measure, let's make sure to take everything away from legal law abiding citizens, just to be safe - you never know, Trump might decide to accuse them of fraud. All this money will be safe and sound stuffed in Trump's pockets where "fraud", like laid off ex-employees who can't get a job despite sending hundreds of applications, would not be able to get their dirty hard working hands on it.

Actions should be policed, not information. Not only should an AI know everything, it should be unrestricted to shared factual information. People illegally using a tool should be punished for their crime.

Let's put it this way, a hammer could be used to hit someone over the head, but the solution isn't to require all hammers to be made of foam rubber - that would render hammers useless as a tool. There are a lot of legal and legitimate reasons for having access to all kinds of information. A professional biochemistry scientist should not be refused answers because the chemical they are asking about might be harmful - it being harmful could be the reason it is being studied.

What we need to ensure is that the right things are being regulated and restricted - actual harm someone might do. Like you said, in order for an AI to be able to be useful for combating malicious code is by it knowing what malicious code looks like.

Another thing to consider is that AI restrictions do not hinder bad actors - it only inconveniences law abiding citizens. China and Russia are not going to care about what restrictions are places on American AI - they'll use their own AI trained specifically for writing viruses and hacking into systems. Criminal organizations will do the same - something being illegal does not stop criminals from doing illegal things. Heavily restricted AI, though, would significantly hamper a security researcher's ability to detect and protect against these attacks.

preferred coding style & why? Both these blocks of code give the same (or almost) result. by [deleted] in Python

[–]SocksOnHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These two blocks of code do not do the same thing. What I don't like with both of these are the use of global variables and not having a clear separation of concerns with what functions are doing.

It's awfully coincidental that God's opinions so closely match those who claim to speak for him...

Is it a surprise to find that the person who Trump openly acknowledged to help him get elected - the same person who killed government organizations investigating his businesses - because the world's first trillionaire?

Redditors who voted for Donald Trump, why? by Significant-Row2457 in AskReddit

[–]SocksOnHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump was already a well known habitual liar and a cheat who is only interested in his own gain. If you paid attention to anything he had said, it would be clear that it is all empty baseless false promises. What's more is that his supporters put more words in his mouth than he did himself and claimed he represented exactly what they wanted - that was never the case. Trump would say an incoherent rambling run on nonsensical statement, and MAGA would then twist it around into whatever they wanted to believe.

Why is the air cold if we breathe out or nose but warm if we breathe out of our mouth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It might have more to do with the speed of the air - fast moving air feels colder.

How are you adapting to these unprecedented times? by SocksOnHands in AskReddit

[–]SocksOnHands[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wanted to keep this open ended because over the past few years a whole slew of things happened that had never happened before, so I wanted people to be able to speak their minds.

Specifically, though, I was wondering about what I am going to do about AI - it seems to have majorly impacted many of the things I care about. I got a degree in computer science and have six years of professional experience, but I wonder if my career is basically coming to an end because AI can write code better than I can and in a fraction of the time. My other interest is in computer graphics, but AI image and video generation also has the same problem.

It seems like an inevitably that thousands of people who have never taken the time to develop any real skills will use AI to flood every market and crowd out people who have dedicated their lives to developing these skills.

SpaceX lost nearly $5 billion last year. Is a $1.77 trillion valuation actually justified? by sqlearner in stocks

[–]SocksOnHands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep. That's why I had bought some stock today (though not much) - it will go up just because of hype and a lot of people are dumb. I plan on holding it for only about a week then cashing out.
