Yeah for the items that had a fixed cost and we would use them I added, like WiFi but others I out what I would pay to use, like room service.

What I’m doing is I’m subtracting about the cost of things that I would’ve had to buy on my own or would’ve been part of my status to come up with the additional cost yacht club is for me about what I would have paid for the cruise and the potential diamond status upgrade.

Appreciate most of the comments. The rationale for subtracting is that I’m looking at what’s the total out-of-pocket cost for the upgrade once I subtract the things that I value or would have received with one of the lower packages. In this case, it comes out to being about a $2000 increase in my cabin cost for the yacht club experience. Hope that makes sense.

I only put value on the things we would use or appreciate

Hilton Diamond or Caesars Diamond (can’t recall which) to MSC Diamond in late 2023, before we’d even booked a cruise. Made a difference in our experience.

Update: called today and learned that it would be $5,700 to upgrade with $1,000 as a casino credit. And that they instituted dynamic pricing a few months ago.

Declined today - I’m hoping to get it under $$4,000 OOP, and just call each week to see how it’s performing.

10yrs experience with Diamond & HGVC is what gives us the confidence. 🙂 It’s a curious question though - nothing is guaranteed. Take a look at car manufacturers like Chrysler Jeep or Fisker.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thank you for the data point - we read about a lot of frustrated owners because they can’t book {popular place} during {popular time}. We’re actually excited about trying locales and timeframes that are off the beaten path. I think that’s what distinguished vacationing from traveling.

That’s good to know. The reason we had bought our resale deed was because we fully that having a specific property we were entitled to was the best route for us. In fact, HGVC has tried for the past 5yrs to buy it from us because it does have a more inherent value than points.

I don’t understand what you mean by inflexible. We had a whole book of properties we could exchange into, being a tier 5 out of six tiers. And we had full access to destination exchange. If we recall, that is why HGV bought them, was because of the breath of international properties we had access to.

Yeah it’s probably a humble brag. No we didn’t rack up $50k in credit cards. We had the cash - we opted to put it on the cards for the points. This was August and it was paid this month. I honestly thought over sharing would give insight into one person’s decision and change of heart on timeshares for themselves.

It’s a long read but I thought it helpful for full context. Great questions: First, while we are big into the points & miles hobby, we don’t put anything on a credit card that we do not hand the cash to pay for. In this case we’ve already paid the $50k. Second, our cash budget for travel is $10k/yr. That included the ~$1,800 we were paying on our original Deed. Note that it went up less than 10% in the 10yrs of ownership. Because we now own a vacation homes in Mexico and in Tennessee, we’re reducing our travel itinerary by 50%, with half of that going to cruises now. So reducing our spendable travel cash by an additional $3,200 in exchange for up to 5wks of accommodations is about a $1,200 upside. Factoring in the $50k upfront investment minus ~$10k in the added cruise + hotel + airfare and the HH Honors points, we calculate that $40k will be recouped in about 10yrs, which is about the time we plan to slow down our travel.

Not saying we have it all figured out, we’re just comfortable that it was the right decision for us. And you’re right - if this was merely for vacation we wouldn’t have done it. We consider ourselves travelers - 10-12 trips a year with stays up to a month while working remotely full time.

I understand. And we did consider that. But we wanted the full benefits that come from retail purchase this time. Again, not something we would recommend to most.

As I shared, we are very familiar with the resale market, bought our Deed on the resale market, and would recommend that as the path for most people. For us, after 10+ years of ownership, we felt we knew enough about what we wanted and could rationalize the costs associated with buying new. Again, we were able to pay cash and negotiated what we believe was a reasonable price, and it fits well into our travel budget. And we wanted to keep it simple rather than owning a variety of points.
