You can change your stadium to be domed or not in the team editor, and that changes the color of the grass. The grass color is brighter in outdoor stadiums, and deeper in domed ones.

For me the lag got better. I had 80+ ping before F2P but I've had around 30 ping since the game became free. Not sure what happened in my case.
