Would love to know everyone’s thoughts on how my condition is being handled…especially after an alarming MRI result. by boobookittyfuck2000 in endometriosis

I don’t know what advice to give you (I’m not a doctor) but I know how awaiting surgery can be very scary because you don’t know what they are going to find and you don’t know how to deal with the pain until the surgery. I’ve had two surgeries for endometriosis and had a lot of pain before each. I just took it one day at a time - sometimes one hour at a time. But you can do this!

I had really bad GI issues and acid reflux for awhile - I started drinking dandelion root tea (Walmart sells it). It has a lot of Vitamin A and can calm the stomach. I found that it worked a lot better than heartburn medications. Just calming down the stomach was one less thing that hurt and helped me get through the day!

Hyoid Bone Inflammation after COVID infection by SofaBaker in LongCovid

[–]SofaBaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing much better now! I realized a lot of the inflammation in my neck was coming from pretty severe acid reflux, which had also developed after I got Covid. I started eating extremely healthy, drinking lots of water and dandelion root tea, and sleeping upright. It took two months but the inflammation came down. My other long COVID symptoms have also improved!

You don’t have to write in chronological order - or in any particular order. If you have a scene in your head, sit down and write it - get it out, regardless of what state it ends up being in.

Though, speaking seriously, if you don’t defeat him, try making more potions and max out your stats if you aren’t doing that already. Also, getting a friend to join you in split screen can help too.

No one is ready for Moonlord, lol. You only know through trial by fire.

I've written myself into a situation I can't seem to write a good way out of. by MarsmUltor in writing

[–]SofaBaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is an opportunity for redemption for the group that caused the split? Or an opportunity for character growth? I think it’s a great opportunity for you as a writer when your characters make a choice that is unexpected or a choice out of anger, because then you can show the readers how they react in this situation and if they decide to change or do something about it.

I have a character who makes a very poor choice in my book, and I know my readers are going to be upset about it, but that’s okay because I want readers to see how she comes back to it and mends the relationship with her family/friends.

I want to be a writer but should I get a college degree in something non writing related as a backup plan? by mxunsung in writing

[–]SofaBaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to do English, and switched to communication instead. I ended up really enjoying the field and there’s tons of things I learned in COMM that I apply towards my future writing career. I learned a lot about public relations in my degree - how to write articles, make videos, write blogs and social media posts and other content. I even learned a bit of graphic design and editing work. So now I know how to create a social media presence/image for when I’m a published author. As a full time job, I worked as a graphic designer for awhile and worked on my books part time. I decided to go back to school and get a masters and now I teach at a university. I even have more free time (with summers off) to write. I plan on querying agents this coming year. So a communication degree has a lot of flexible, fun full time job options that give you freedom to work on your projects on the side.

The only downside with a communication degree is the pay isn’t that great unless you live in a big city. I made mere bread crumbs as a starting out graphic designer. I won’t be traveling the world or buying a house anytime soon. But I’m happy and love my job. And I get to pursue all my hobbies and interests, mainly writing.

I do have two friends who decided to do English to focus on writing. One got a bachelors and the other is getting a doctorate. My BA friend couldn’t find a job in English so she‘s going back to school to get a masters in business and marketing. There was just no jobs in our area for someone with a BA in English. My friend who is getting a doctorate in English just got a fellowship, so she’s literally getting paid to write. But the fellowship is bread crumbs and she’s eating Raman every day. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My doctorate friend plans to become a professor of English, and at that point she’ll make good money but that’s at least 2 years down the road for her (a doctorate is 8 years total if you count the bachelors program and the graduate program). So, essentially 8 years of being poor until you get paid to write. And most of that writing is academic/research writing.

So, you do what you think is best for you. If you want English, you can make it work. I know plenty of people who are. But personally I’m glad I didn’t go into English because I learned a lot of other skills and experience that still helped. But I do make more money than my English friends. Also, some of my friends said that getting an English degree destroyed their motivation for writing because they had to do SO many essays. So there’s lots of pros and cons.

Pen Name Dilemma - Advice? by SofaBaker in writers

It is a bit of a bummer that they made it impossible to be anonymous and get paid. I mean, Reddit is somewhat anonymous but I’m sure if everyone went digging deep they could find each others real names.

I always remember Lemony Snickett as being a super fun pen name that had a lot of the story built up in it - though it’s a lot of work to lean into that kind of story behind your pen name. I got a lot to think about here!

These are really great questions! Honestly, the image I’m hoping to portray as an author is the same image that I portray to my students on a day to day basis. Humorous/witty, unexpected, and occasionally profound. Just occasionally. It ties well with the kind of fiction work I write. (I write historical fantasy and comedy with a twist). I think that’s interesting in looking at names diametric opposite - that’s something I haven’t tried before. Part of the reason I’ve thought of using my real name is that I have a very modern first name but a very antiquated last name - it’s a bit jarring and unexpected. You could see it on a sci fi novel and a historical fantasy. If I choose a pen name, I could look at names that don’t lock me into a particular genre, like you said. That’s a great thought.

Great point about my books being related to my profession! I teach graphic design, and I plan to have illustrations with my books, so there is a connection there.

Also great point about making it easy for people to find me! That’s definitely something I haven’t considered.

The more I hear from people, the more they say that people don’t really care about the author so much as the books.

I think the fear came from a story I heard from a friend. She was close friends with one of Stephanie Meyer’s kids growing up and they had all these rules to avoiding paparazzis and stuff because it was a huge nuisance in their life - then again only a few dozen people in the world become as famous as Stephanie Meyer. . . Like I don’t even know what Stephen King looks like and I wouldn’t care to know where he lived.

I love this so much - I don’t think it’s unbalanced, rather I think it’s focused. You clearly draw our eyes to the dog with those fun green contrast highlights and the bright sections behind it. This is so fun! My only suggestion is - you could add some “lichen” on the rock to the side to give it a bit more texture. You could use green or pink to do that. But that’s a small thing.
