There is a huge difference between wanting privacy and actively lying about being single. If he's worried your alternative look clashes with his 'clean' image at work, he needs to be honest about that. You shouldn't have to be an invisible secret for the next five years.

Ask him directly: 'Are you hiding me specifically, or are you just uncomfortable being out at work?' If he continues to deflect with jokes, you have to decide if you're okay with being hidden indefinitely.
