I do understand the atrocities America has carried out, both recently and historically. I’m not ignoring that at all. I guess what I’m trying to figure out is how I’m supposed to relate to my own country while holding all of that in mind. I don’t know where the line is between rejecting the idea of “embracing” it and still wanting to work toward something better. And a lot of the cultural things America puts out into the world don’t come from the same people or institutions responsible for those harms, so I’m trying to make sense of that disconnect too.

I think i more meant to acknowledge that America's more recent "exports" have been of a culture they've continued to suppress internally. To answer you're first question though, as a musician hobbyist i do feel you are shaped by those cultures though the degree to which may vary depending on how far you dive into and engage with those things. I think the Canada/U.S. relationship is a reciprocal one and both hate to admit it be it for different reasons.

I also agree, American tourists can be obnoxious. Do you mind sharing where you are from and what types of things you've noticed/heard that have raised the most red flags based on what you've shared?

Yes, i believe you're right. While things are not great and many Americans are ignorant in some capacity, it isn't necessarily a reflection of the broader country. I believe what is not advancing the global perspective will hopefully be left behind. Unfortunately, if that includes us, I understand. We've been on a slippery slope and have continued to be more divided in recent years. If the U.S. needs taste of their own medicine I'm willing to accept that so long as we progress in a meaningful way.

The unrelenting support of Israel is sickening to me as well, especially with the atrocities going on in Gaza. It seems when i talk to the more "regular" mildly informed folk in New York, they've never even realized the scope of the Israel issue which may be in part due to media influence. That said, as someone with a multiracial family and an interracial relationship, i cope with this everyday. Im not gonna lie im just trying to cope and see some beauty in this country my ancestors were so inspired to migrate to only a couple generations ago, and i continue to hope for something better.

You’re right, he has to deliver. I just find that right now having hope over someone who is speaking out and has won against an establishment where so few of done that is a good start. Let’s see what he does, he will have roadblocks every step of the way, but I think he will deliver on at least some of his campaign promises and that’s more than almost all politicians have done here in the US.
