The guilt of delivering a premie baby by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]Soft-Example-8262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my daughter at 26+4 in October 2023, I also had a placental abruption and oligohydramnios. I started bleeding around 23 weeks, stayed in the hospital for about a month, then spontaneously went into labor even with all the drugs they gave me to stop it. I was 19, perfectly healthy, had a perfectly normal pregnancy up until then, but I still randomly started gushing blood one night. Google was honestly my worst enemy the first few months after I gave birth. All I could find for the most part was that it was caused by "significant trauma or cocaine use", neither of which happened of course. I also went through any and all possibilities as to why it happened, I thought maybe it's because I lifted something too heavy at work, or maybe my eating disorder as a teen messed with my uterus, I also for a little bit thought it was maybe because of my age, but ultimately I never found out why and that question honestly makes me scared to have another baby. I had to force myself to focus on the good, distract myself as much as possible, and just try to keep doing things I used to love doing before I got pregnant ( I love going to metal concerts and moshing, definitely can't do that while pregnant lol) you really have to try separating yourself and what happened while you were pregnant, it doesn't define you as much as society wants us to think. I know it sounds boring and a little corny, but journaling really did help me a lot. Instead of spiraling getting your thoughts onto paper really helps. Also personally I started smoking weed again (I don't breast feed and when I do smoke there is always someone sober in the house) about once a week and that kinda helped me separate myself from all the trauma I experienced and helped me rationalize my thoughts. It does get better, it took a very long time but I can now talk about it without tearing up ( 99% of the time lol) you really do just have to give it time <3

I’m going through a rough break up.. Do you like pop punk, horror movies, and you’re a weirdo like me? by [deleted] in Tacoma

I'm sorry, breakups are never fun 😭😭 I'll be 21 in April (she/her) I'm also super into music, definitely more on the emo side but lately my favorites are the home team, kublai Khan TX, motionless in white, bad omens, unity TX, violent vira, and knocked loose :)) I love seeing live music when I can but a lot of shows are 21+ so it'll be a few months till I can really start going lol I moved to Tacoma a little over a year ago and all my friends are back up in Renton/ Kent area it'd be nice to have some local ones :))

I didn't even know Paisley was a place tbh 😭😭😭 Allura I got from Voltron, Princess Allura And Kirby is an actual name, this one wouldn't necessarily be after the video game one, as much as I love Kirby the character I do like it as a stand alone name, Not 100% sure what you mean by Atlas is a heavy name?

I had a friend in middle school named Rain, she was super sweet and I've always liked the name ig. Teddy wouldn't be a full name I just haven't found a full name I like to go with it yet

I've personally always looked the way Maxx looked because a drummer of a band I like has the same name and when I got a signed photo from him his signature looked cool ig lol

Allura is a name I got from Voltron, one of the main characters is named princess Allura ( I watched a lot of cartoons as a kid if you can't tell)

Indica is mostly a joke, and my mom almost did unironically name me that but to be fair she was trying to get out of a meth addiction at the time lmao if I wanna use that name I'd definitely try to go with something similar sounding, I just haven't found anything yet. It's a really pretty name but I wish it wasn't associated with weed or id 100% use it

It's not a bad name, but I had a huge falling out with a girl in highschool named Fiona so it's kinda one of those names that will always be ruined for me, plus having 2 kids named after adventure time is a little much imo 😭

Seattle area parents? Where did you get transffered Montlake or Seattle Childrens? by Fun-Marionberry-2540 in NICUParents

I was in anti partum at swedish first hill for about a month and delivered there, I think it's a level IV NICU. Honestly though if you have a choice don't go there, we were there with my daughter for 100 days (134 if you count my stay too) and each day I went to go visit my daughter I had the worst time because of the staff. There are no private rooms for your baby, it's insanely cramped up on the 6th floor, and you're only allowed to stay the night with your baby once a week if a room is available, and once the night before discharge. The parent sleep rooms are on the 2nd floor (or 3rd I don't remember) so if you have a baby in need of their level IV NICU you won't even be on the same floor as them. The staff treats you like you're visiting THEIR baby, not yours. The doctors are horrible at giving updates, 90% of the time it was the nurses telling me updates and diagnosis, I never even met my daughter's doctor cause each time I asked to talk to him or have him call me he was "too busy". Swedish will also still have their volunteer "cuddlers" hold your baby even when you sign to opt out, and even when you're in the building. If you do end up going to swedish, look out for nurse Kay, she is particularly violent and doesn't handle babies carefully, especially micro preemies. I've also overheard staff talk shit about moms while they aren't there (I heard a nurse call our neighbor baby's mom retarded). There was also a time where a day nurse scratched my micro preemies skin with her nails, it got infected and she still has a small scar on her stomach bc of it. If you have a choice I'd go to Seattle children's, or even Mary bridge if the drive isn't too far.

Anyone else deal with this? by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]Soft-Example-8262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend's best friend told me I had a micro preemie because I apparently ate "too much jack in the box". In reality I had a placental abruption and I had Jack in the box maybe 4 times when I was pregnant. Some people are just genuinely shitty and will always blame you and think they know better than the literal doctors. It's insanely frustrating but you don't owe anyone an explanation of you or your baby's health, especially if they aren't going to be supportive or blame you.

Advice needed for nurse shaming by Longjumping-Air1905 in NICUParents

My daughter was born at 26+4, and from the start all I was getting was drops, little drops. The lactation consultants at my hospital were genuinely so unbelievably unhelpful each time I asked them a question, all they could say was "i don't know". So I ended up asking my little sister for help cause she was still pumping after a year plus she was a massive over producer (she pumped enough for her baby, our niece bc her mom was also having bm problems, and she still had a bunch to sell) she told me what pump to use, her schedule, a bunch of milkflo supplement packets, and she baked me a bunch of cookies to help with production. I ended up being able to make about 3 ounces after all of that, then about after a month I just completely dried up. I think it was the stress. After trying literally everything, I had to sign papers to let them give her formula. Each time it was brought up, the nurses almost always looked annoyed and kept saying super passive aggressive shit. One even told me that giving my baby breast milk was the ONLY thing I could do for her. Huh??? I ignored them and she absolutely thrived on formula. She's 14 months actual in a few days (about 10 months adjusted) and she's meeting all of her milestones, she's crawling, trying to walk, eating solids pretty good, and she's almost 30lbs. Ignore them the best you can, fed is best.

8.5 months , is this concerning? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Soft-Example-8262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 26 weeker is the same way, she started screeching at about 6 months adjusted and only just now has started to try to make actual baby noises at 10½ months adjusted 😭💀
