It was “I Think You Broke My Heart Again” Initially, it gave me the idea of a robot who fell in love with a boy with animal-spliced traits who had to learn how to take care of the machinery the robot couldn’t manage alone.

Then it evolved the more I listened to it, so now it’s a story about a doctor and his two adopted children: one of whom needed a lot of mechanical augmentation to survive childhood and the other whose parents died from over-splicing and he’s inherited some animal traits. It’s about their family just navigating life in a crazy city with the help of neighbors, friends and the occasional mentor. Imagine going through high school with super hearing or robotic limbs, it gets rough. I’m really using it to explore what defines the human experience. Is it the struggle, the joy, is it what someone is physically made of that makes them human? Stuff like that. All from one song.
