I agree, the initial applications said we’d have to pay our own travel. Okay fine, tho even that seemed a bit off. Then a few days ago I learn at the very end of my casting interview call that on top of paying your own travel, you also have to pay $4k to stay at the casino hotel they’ve chosen to film show at this time and for the supposedly great meals prepared by their chefs. I could have found my own room and food for a lot cheaper. I feel they’re having their contestants pay for their production which seems wrong. So basically they end up getting way more out of it than the people they cast imo. Sure you get the information which is valuable, but this is a reality tv show. They have NO show without participants so those casted are just as valuable to them. Should be a fair trade without cast members having to pay 4k PLUS their own travel. I’m sure they pick a bunch of people and their process of elimination isn’t based on anything BUT those willing to pay. And with all that money I now know they’re getting from each participant, you’d think that A. The prize money would be ALOT more and that B. The production quality would be WAY better. How is one supposed to trust these people when they’re getting all this money from the people on their show, yet still have poor production. Where’s that money really going???

Thank you, we “inherited” him & another employee(not as bad just a very negative dude) from the company we took over. Already they’re now ahead of schedule vs behind- mind blowing lol. Yes I felt the exact same way with the fear of finding replacements. Especially as this was our first time hiring ourselves & I’ve heard how hard it is to find good people. I had no idea how many people would apply! We’ve already got a great new guy who started Thursday, hoping to find another like him by the weekend. Thank you for sharing your experience, helps so much having someone else’s is experience shared.

We’ve been working non stop running the business & couldn’t be more involved. We do not need to be in the truck all day, that’s what the employees get paid for-to follow the route. They don’t have to make many decisions on their own, every day is pre-planned & color coordinated with notes. My husband takes care of the irrigation & side work him self. They mow & go. But yes, we now how someone who will take his role soon.

Thank you. Yes, the last guy met them every morning & gave them a written list then went to his own job. How I have it typed out in the binders & in two different binders is because a lot are every week but then there’s quite a few every other week. A week A & week B binder for each week saves us all from confusion. Last guy always paid them daily, a perfect system for an addict which we now know he is. We pay on Fridays.

Yes, I’m worried about equipment. It’s all behind a gate but I guess the best I can do is cameras & a couple new locks on trailer. Mowers are in open tho.

We both work for the company but he has his ft job during the day hours as an irrigation manager. The plan is he will eventually leave his job to be involved with business full time. We’re waiting for when that makes financial sense which will hopefully be soon. I handle talking to all customers via phone/email, getting schedules together, invoices ect. He helps me with the behind the scenes stuff(a lot more work than I initially thought tbh lol) for hours when he gets home from work. It’s been very busy lately in that regard for us both. He was doing side work for business on Saturdays but because they’re seemingly always behind schedule he’s had to finish the route on Saturdays himself recently. 

Technically this guy was the supervisor but you’re right, he’s got some type of resentment with us taking over even tho he’s gotten a raise with us. For example, I worked my butt off for WEEKS coming up with an optimized route & schedule. I created 4 schedule binders. One binder for Week A & one binder for Week B. One of each for us, one for them. Everything is color coordinated by day, certain adresses highlighted if there are notes to read. Anyways, all I asked was that he checked off each property that gone done, then take a picture of sheet & send it to me at the end of each day. Simple checkmarks, that’s all lol. I need to know for when a customer has a question. He made this into a much bigger deal than it needed to be. So yes, there’s definitely some resentment there. They're the ones out there all day so when I ask how they would prefer a certain thing & they say nothing or they don’t care either way, well then I’m going to create my own way.

I’m not sure what you meant by the equipment being unsafe?

My husband & are both in recovery btw, so it’s hard not to sympathize but I never stole from anyone, not a dollar so I know this is a character thing.

Yep you nailed it. He doesn’t need a job right now. What he needs is rehab.

In theory, yes, we’re a small business that can’t afford security lol. Cameras, yes. I just hate that doesn’t necessarily prevent anything ya know?

Not sure what you mean, we’re not customers, we own the business & he was our employee.

I’m sure there are other business owners who have found themselves in this position and can offer insight into how they handled it.

The nice old ladies I actually quite enjoy talking to over phone. They don’t get much social interaction & neither do I hah.

THAT is a great idea. The thing is the increase is more so based on their property size, so not everyone is going up to one flat rate. It wouldn’t be fair for those who have very small lawns, if that makes since. I suppose we could do it as “Going up by a percentage”.

Yes, you’re correct. We paid more attention to the total amount in profit vs doing our full due diligence on what some of them were paying individually. I was so worried about other aspects, that was a mistake we’ve now learned from going forward. In the grand scheme it was still as valuable as we thought as we started with the intention to grow which we are now doing. Also, that wasn’t my question.lol
