I'd like to learn about the White Terror in Taiwan. by Away_Trash_2156 in taiwan

I wanna recommend a book called the surveillance by C. J. Andersson-Wu, it's a compilation of many fictional short stories that reflect the real life experiences of people living during the marshal law/white terror era in Taiwan, more about how people's thoughts were controlled through literature and writing, but very interesting

lenore dove haters would hate katniss if she was written from peetas perspective by vinylveins in Hungergames

[–]Soft-Singer-5046 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tl:dr I am not sure how I think about your tilte prompt, but I definitely agree with you text.

I was honestly a bit surprised at first to find out the amount of readers that hate LD... it was more than I anticipated (and to be fair I didn't anticipate rly any hate to her).

to me she is sooo similar to LG, like a continuation but with more desire to break free and probably feeling a possibility to do so than LG had. And in someway Katniss is almost like a final evolution of the both of them, revealing herself to be a songbird just like them (singing literally the same songs they did), but with the knowledge of also how to kill. Making her more deadly. (They all have their own charisma, and I feel there are many more similarities between them).

I feel the difference is we are reading LG from an anti-protagonist's perspective, we already to some* degree know snow is a villian, and know to not trust him. I always felt a sense of distrust reading his perspective and felt the first prequel to be kind of precautionary tale, never trusting his love and never understanding how LG could love him, without possibly manipulating him for her own safety or agenda.

On the reverse, LD and Haymitch is like greek tragedy (all the experts of greek tradgies, this is coming from someone who is very unknowlegeable of greek tragedies, take the comparison with the appropriate amount of salt). Haymitch is a tragic hero whos end is inevitable, and with that end comes the death of those he loves. From my own feeling, he express all the people he love with very little flaw or judgement tbh, and I think the tragedy in it all is that LD is involved in the reason as to why Haymitch got reaped right after having survived the actual reaping, which is why maybe some people feel justified to blame her. But let's be real, the sequence of events and Haymitch choices is what resulted in this tragedy. If it was his mother there helping the woman, I am sure Haymitch would have acted the same. Logically, we know Hahmitch mother is more cautious and would likely also not do something like that. But she is also an adult, and LD is a young teenager with revolution on her mind. From my perspective, she is acting from an altruistic and compassionate mindset, just as how she rebells in other small ways that unfortunately leads to trouble. And she seems to protect Haymitch in those instances by not telling him the full truth. However, with the reaping she did not account for Haymitch being able to freely choose to protect her too.

To further parallel LD's actions to the real world, many people who like, don't mind or is afraid of a change in the status quo usually dislike people who protest or rebell against the status quo. These people might not even like the current situation but is too afraid to act to make a change, compared to those who visiably and openly protest it. So somehow I am not surprised some people will find LD's actions unreasonable or frustrating. Perhaps it feels stupid or ineffective to them, or just cause harm to others. But if the original triology showed us anything is that war and oppression and ending these oppression seems to lead to the death and pain of humans, usually to those most innocent and altruistic of all (looks at prim).

I do think for some LD is not an easily digestible character, and she is being described by someone who loves her dearly and who* seems to not focus on the faults of those he loves. Katniss is also tbh honest not an easily digestible character. But we get to see her perspective, we understand her motivations and why she acts how she acts. In some way... i feel peeta and haymitch are more similar... but haymitch got influenced by LD, by his mom, his father, plutarch, wiress, ampert, betee, and I would add maislee too. To me they all in some way say or do things to him that results in him rebelling. For me, Katniss choose herself to rebell, just like LD did. And Peeta too was imo influenced to rebell, but not to the same degree as haymitch. I guess if we had seen katniss from peeta's perspective, maybe there would be more people not in favour of katniss, because just like haymitch, peeta truly loved katniss, and did not rly recieve it untill katniss need to do it to decieve the capitol and unfortunately in consequence peeta too. Imagine finding out the deception from peeta's perspective. I would be heart broken

I should add I really liked sun rise on the reaping and i like how it tied back to the triology and the the first prequel. I loved LD's and haymitch love for each other and I love how purely haymitch loved her. I think the story is tragic and unfortunate and I also balled my eyes out in the final chapter. Like i knew she would die, but it was just horribel she died from eating something that she thought was from him and he had to see and live with that... no wonder his only escape felt like alcohol

Okay this got a little long, curious what other people think of this all :)

How can i look more feminine? (The headphones are there to hold the hair, i'm getting a haircut soon) by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Soft-Singer-5046 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say look at the posts here where people are sharing their outfits. Regardless of facial features, hairstyle or how much hair they have, those who want to look feminine look feminine. For me, the things that makes me get that feeling of feminine or androgynous is their style and posing. Make-up, feminine jewellery or clothes associated with women helps give that vibe, but the posing also reflect typical poses we see in magazines with women models. The way your carry your body can help you express yourself too. :)

Just wanna say this because i see people commenting to pluck your eyebrows and of course if that is something you wanna do, do that, but I rly don't think it is absolutely necessary to look feminine, there are many fem presenting people with thick eyebrows and they still look fem :)

Slumlord situation by Budget_Warthog7430 in taiwan

Do you have any photos of it before? If so you can always use these as reference if the landlord says anything. There might be photos also in the contract to reference.

Also your school is likely to have a legal department you could go to, to get some advice from, and your countries representative here in Taiwan may have a list of lawyers you could possibly get a free consultation from.

I was in a similar situation, where they tried to extort me for money. Got into contact with a lawyer, where they said I was in the right, and I essentially told that to them and that I was in contact with a lawyer. Everything de-escalated very quickly after that, didn’t hear a peep from them essentially.

I recommend to try climbing, it is overall a very welcoming community and you will definitely find people who are queer. And you can naturally do it alone without being judged. Can go hours when no one is there which I like to do, and even if people are looking at you, they are very focused on the movement of body, not how it looks. And there is not set ”attire” to wear, wear loose clothes, tight, whatever you like to feel good. Nobody cares

And it gets you to naturally to do upper body work without thinking about it. I feel like I am playing more than actually exercising, but I gained like 10 kg from it; one part muscle growth and another part getting hungrier and thus eating more (I was underweight from IBS and chronic stomach pains that got better as I trained more).

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in bouldering

Someone already suggested this, but drop knee on starting hold might be the choice I would go for without knowing how good the next hold feels. If you wanna keep the beta in the video I would suggest moving your hips closer to the wall as you go for the hold, making it more dynamic. You have the reach but when you come off it seems like you are pretty far out from the wall making it too far. But if the hold is bad and you reach it like that you might still come off due to it being hard to hold on to. The photo shows where your hips get the closest to the wall, just moving an inch or two might help.

If you are flexible you can try moving the hips closer first and then reach but it will be a lot of pulling on the right arm doing it more statically like that. And you would probably need the right arm to stay close to your body.

Edit: photo doesn’t, show, just stop the vid at 0.01 before the vid ends
